While most of the reports are centering around the world class White Marlin fishing out of the South Jersey, DE and MD we as well a few other charter boats and private boats have been managing to put together some decent tuna catches with an occasional nice Wahoo boated. There are also lots of fine eating Mahi out there as most know about and one of my mates speared one around 40 lbs last weekend around a pot but that takes some guts to jump in out there in the deep with a spear guy and snorkel.
It is not red hot by any means and most of the Yellowfins are small with far too many False Albacore around but you can put together a nice catch on smaller Yellowfins by wading through the Falsies. Not for everyone but our charter customers loved the last few trips as there was lots of action plus some fine eating table far. These tuna can be jigged up around the massive schools of rays or trolled and we have down both on all our trips to date. There even has been a few nice size Bluefins brought back the last week or so locally and they should increase in numbers as the inshore water cool.
Most are not aware of it but later in the day we are seeing more Yellowfins over 60 lbs caught with fewer False Albacore mixed in after around 4:30 pm for some reason. Only Mother Nature knows why this is happening but my mate got one on Tuesday at 5:00 pm that went 61lbs dressed out and had 2 other Yellowfins fishing at along the 30 fathom line. Again these are not the 50-65 lb ones we were catching most of the summer up inside the Carteret Canyon along the 40 fathom line but none the less they are Yellowfins and far better than we had last year at this time.
