Tarpon Charter - Neuse River/Pamlico Sound

    Great looking site here!!

Looks like the right place to ask for recommendations for a tarpon charter in the Neuse river area near Oriental.

Would like to take my brother on a trip. Please post recommendations and I will check back.

I guess it would help to give an introduction - name is Bob Ross and I leave in Havelock and have been mostly fishing for smaller fish than these tarpons, but would like to give it a try. Looking for someone who will take the time to explain the tatics.

    Thanks in advance,

    Bob

    Welcome to SFC!

It really is the ultimate fishing resourceThis is another reason why, I am a full time year round tarpon guide in one of, I would honestly say the 3rd to 5th best places on the planet and one of the most consistent day in and day out. What do you want to know? You ask a question and I will give my best answer. I certainly don't know everything, but I catch my share

thanks guys that was quick. Two recommendations for Capt Brian, he must be pretty good. Have any of you fished with him? I'll do a search to see if he has a website.

    Thanks again,

    Bob

    Capt Michael,

thanks for the welcome and the offer. I have been wanting to try my hand at these creatures for a couple of years now and figured the best way to get a jump on it was to go on a charter. I understand it can be a little different approach depending where you fish for them at. I see that you are in Puerto Rico, I make it down there every year or so, dang sure need to get hooked up with you some time down there. Tried several years ago to do a tarpon trip in the San Juan area, but got blown out. Where do you fish out of?

Any way back to your offer:

The couple of guys that I have talked to about tarpon fishing up this way say they anchor up after spotting them and start chumming for them with menhaden. Most set four rods. Can't find out the rigs they are using but most say they are using cut up mehaden for baits.

I would really like to figure this out and felt like there had to be a capt out there that would be willing to take us on a charter and teach us a few tricks - not looking for all the secrets - just a few tips to give us a fighting chance.

    Thanks,

    Bob

Glenn W - a time or two hundred...I like that.

Can you give me an example of what makes him world class. My brother is pretty special to me, I guess most are, and I wanted to make sure this was the trip of his life time. He is always bragging about the halibuts he catches in Alaska and I figured that a tarpon would give a pretty good tug also.

    Thanks,

    Bob

I did this exact same thing for the last hour this morning and got two. What you are looking for is multiple fish rolling in a 30' diameter area for a few minutes. Often you have to re-anchor as they move. Do exactly as you describe, cutting bunker in half and spread it like two or three handfuls around where your baits are. I take three or four head pieces and go through the eyes with an 8/0 owner circle and then a six foot section of 60 to 100lb fleuro snelled to the hook, a six foot 80lb shock of cajun red line just because it is easier to say don't reel past the red and I want 12 feet of leader and that fleuro is high dollar with a blood knot connecting the two, then tie a bimmini or a rose knot(an 8 turn surgeons loop) in your mainline(i suggest power pro)and connect the mainline to the leader via a yucatan knot(look it up, it is simple as hell) or an albright, rubber band a weight on with current and match your chum to the current as well. Hope this helps and feel free to ask more ?'s

Not withstanding the fact he eats, breaths, and lives fishing, I have never seen a man with the prowness and god given instincts he has for finding and catching fish--- Blue Marlin to Speckled Trout and everything in between. Brian's two real loves in fishing are Blue Marlin and those overgrown silver Shad.
A more professional you will never meet, yet within an hour you will feel like your are fishing with a good friend instead of a hired Captain-- a little hard to explain.
