Their main goal in regards to fisheries seems to be to increase the biomass to historic levels and find ways to keep it there. Right now, many fish stocks are at about 10% of their potential size. Isn't some increased regulation on the purse seiners and long liners worth having abundant fisheries like we used to have?

When I was a kid, a boat harpooned 27 swordfish one day within sight of Martha's Vineyard. I'd be perfectly happy to give a little ground in order to have anything like that again.

I'd politely suggest you read their Form 990 (available on guidestar.org) and maybe consider that recreational fishermen are threatened far more by Omega Protein and the other Big Seafood players than by Pew. I could be wrong (I'm sure someone here will tell me I am ), but that's how I see it.
Did you ever think of how they will achive their targeted goal of bringing fish stocks back to histrical levels? Its simple get everyone off the ocean. This is their goal. Right now they are pushing for catch shares for recs and charter boats. Guess what that will mean for you. If this goes through some people who invest into the catch share program that are not even fishermen will become very rich. If your a fishermen take the blinders off and do some research and dig into what you will find is a complete majic show put on by the pew trust and others. FYI you took the bait hook line and sinker as to what they want fishiermen who read that mag to think, that commercial fishing is wiping out the fisheries and for us to stand with them to put them out of business. If we do that we will be put out to pasture just as fast! Its allready in motion, do some research.

I took everyone's advice and did some research. It seems to me that Pew has the best interest of the fishery in mind and so do I. If a few MPAs and some catch shares are what it takes to create a robust fishery, I'm all for it.

The past 3 decades have seen our stocks dwindle from overfishing. It's time to make a few changes.

I think the "there will be no place to fish" stuff is a bit overstated. Even if Pew's wildest dreams came true, they might protect 2-3% of the oceans.

I guess I'd rather be able to fish in a more restricted ocean that was full of fish than be able to fish wherever I wanted in an ocean with very few fish and nothing but purse seiners on the horizon.

I'm sure everyone will come around to my viewpoint eventually

yeah that 2-3% will be the part everybody fishes.

And no, everyone will not come around to your viewpoint eventually.

    PEW SCUM

Do not give these guys an inch.

The Pew scum have been very busy in lobbying the Australian Federal Govt. They are in the process of creating the worlds largest marine park. This marine park will see closure off all fishing grounds to pros and recs in the coral sea. The size of the park is approx 1 million square kilometers and is from the eastern edge of the great barrier reef to our marimtime borders with Papua New Guinea, The Solomon Islands and New Caledonia.

Goodbye black marlin fishing, goodbye gt popping expeditions, goodbye live aboard trips. Our current govt is going to make this happen very very soon. This is with out a doubt one of the finest fisheris in the world if not the best. Where else can you catch 50 plus 70 pound wahoo in a morning on spin rods, catch 20 gt to 100 pounds after lunch (and loose a **** load more) then troll for granders as the sun sets over the horizon. The reefs are allready protected by being within the Australian EEZ. No foreign fishing vessels and barley any local ones. The distances involved in getting to these places prevents them from being fished out. If 90% of the big fish in the world are gone then 90% of the remaining big fish live in the coral sea. There are no little ones only giants.

Not only is 30 percent of the Great Barrier Reef off limits we will now loose the jewel in the crown. This goes on top of the confirmed additions to no take marine parks on the NSW coast at South West Rocks , Solitary Islands and Jervis Bay and the New Federal Marine Parks which will see all forms of fishing banned in a massive 30% of all Australian federal waters from 3 miles to 80 miles offshore and closures of state waters that lay adjacent. As well as the proposed Sydney Hawkesbury Shelf marine park to ban all fishing off our largest capital city and proposed Fraser Island Marine park to ban fishing there.

We have a hung parliment here. The labour left has lost alot of ground to the greens (real socialist not your ******** democrat socialist). The only way for the govt to pass bills is to make deals with the greens (who are all inner city, late drinking, floppy haired, bike riding tossers who work in design or art galleries and think fishing is cruel).

Do not trust PEW. They are just fucking you over. Have a look at the attachment to see the sheer size of the coral sea marine park. Also have a look at a map of Australia. Its almost the same size as the USA. 30% off all waters out to 80 nm wil be no fishing.

Dont know who you are, hell you could be anybody, but from that last statement you just said your not a fishermen thats for damn sure!! I suggest you dig real deep into the pew foundation see how it was started and the people who started and it why, then maybe you might get a clue as to what kind of people they are. Trust me when I say they are not looking out for rec fishermen, fact is they want them off the water for other reasons, dig deep and you will see why!!
