Well, the closest season here in the northeast is shark season. I've seen those tail ropes with wire inside the rope or coating on the outside to make it stiff. Can anyone give me info on how to make one or where to buy?

i know they carry it not sure who else.
very simple to make just get about 5feet of coated cable, attach a stainless steel clip, crimp it. Then crimp the other end into a loop about 3-4inches. Then splice a 20ft rope to the 3-4in loop. Very simple to make you can get all your supplies at your local West marine or boating store.
i will post pics of the ones i have made when i get a chance.
I got mine at fishermens outfitters, just wish the rope part of it was a little longer.
We use a flying tailer. We use one made by So Lo and it's been really good to use for all our research work. It's a lot easier then spitting out teeth from a wild tail![]()
I believe that All Tackle can get you set up and when you rig it myadvice is to go with the plaited kevlar rope. Nice and soft on the boat and real chew proof![]()
tail ropes suck!!!!! you'll throw it right in the water. get rid of the shotgun, thats a joke. oh yea, i just caught a shark. BAM, BAM, BAM, learn to fish. wear the thing out on the rod. and when he comes to the boat you will wonder why you have all that silly stuff in the boat. shotguns are for pheasant hunting, not shark fishing. and when you gaff the shark....once he is tired and your sure you want to keep him. oh my,just put a tail rope on him. because that silly tail roper will make you look stupid, because it is! jmo!
Go to Reel Life Bait and tackle in Pt. Pleseant, they have tailers for $40 there, and the other stores in Pt. and Reel Life carry the Aftco tailers. I have found that tailers are easier to get over a tail then a rope itself. Hubis is right, if the shark is worn out you probably will not even need one, but we always have one onboard and ready. We only use the tailer if the shark is large, if it us under 150lbs, big straight gaff and 2 guys lift it in. If the fish is green we will usually let him tire himself out, a green shark is not fun. As for guns, I'm not a fan, we carry a bang stick for large sharks, they are legal to carry and safe. Usually one bang will put a shark out, 2 at most.
I am cheap sometimes... I bought a cable for a dog run and converted that. If it can stop a changing 100 pound lab, it should hold on a played out shark.
Total cost, $10.
The aftco ones are much nicer, but I need the extra $70 for gas....
