Great post. I learned a lot. More swords seem to have been caught last year up here than before. I think more anglers targeted them while chunking. I always has trouble figuring out a good spread for swords. Your info helped. I'll never buy a prerigged squid again

Guess I put this on the wrong thread

Thanks Deep. You couldn't make sound easier......... I know better, just have to figure out how to get this computer on board for referal. What size squids? Do you clear the lines on the fight. Do these things fight up and down, on top.
What can you tell us about their range. I know they get em well north of us and obviously well south. Any chance they wander close enough to the Carolina coats for an overnighter? Dangling lit up squids would seem to attract all kinds of critters.

Aha! I see some more question answerin needed.
I leave the other rigs out for a while when bowed up. If it was a deep bite I try to sink the others or if a high bite I try to raise them.
The fight on swords varies as to where in the water column. They move around a whole lot more than say tuna that seem to get in the circles of death. Swords will go left right up down and can get there quick. Very common is it to be fighting straight down a half spool when suddenly they rocket for the top and they start jumping around in the dark as you wind like hell to get that slack caught up.
With the lights running its common to get other goodies in the game like tuna, dolophin etc. I try to limit putting much meat out as it will draw sharks into the game and with 14-17" squids bringing pretty high dollar each, I hate to donate them to jaws. Remember though that makos and swords share similar habits and areas they hang. So be prepared...
Range? Well from the tropics to newfoundland pretty well covers it since they live deep I wouldn't think cold bothers them too much. Our gulfstream here runs 79 in winter and 84 or so in summer. My baits are effectively sitting in 100, 200, 300 feet down here. Since its a shade cooler up there yoiu might try 75, 125, 200 or something like that.

Actually the rigging you describe is basically novice...and every once in a BIG while you might get that lucky fish on. But for the most part you will continue to catch schoolies on that rig. Even the price on your Swordfishing Charters is novice.
Not to burst your bubble but yea I would call that Swording 101

What a way to go at a guy who is only trying to help! You may be right and Deep may be a novice at this game, but, please don't be nasty about it. Instead, you could show us how you do it. We would appreciate that a lot.
    Thanks,
