15 degrees witll give you the correct angle on a bent butt planner rod
Just as Glenn said, the 15* will give you the correct angle on the rod.
If your planer has a full length butt, then I strongly recommend the Lee Heavy-Duty, Extra-Long, 15-degree swivel holder. That is the one I installed on the starboard side of our Grady, between the two factory rod holders. The tip of the planer rod is perfectly positioned so the line stays clear of the engines, but you can easily reach back for the bridle to clip it on or off.

I was once heard that you could put a gold ball in a rod holder and get the same effect as a swivel rod holder, anyone try this.
Bill if you are working the fish from the rod holder it makes it easier to follow him and takes some strain off the rod. I guess you could say it works like turning the chair.

The gimble needs to be able to rotate so the bend but rod tracks toward the line as the boat turns. Otherwise a large twisting moment if placed on a fixed gimble and the base of the rod. A golf ball wouldn't be ideal because you want the rod to "lock" into a gimble and you want the rod as deep into the rod holder as possible because of the large load on it so you don't want to loose that 1.5" from the height of the ball.
