    Surfcasting Reels

hey all. i'm in the market for a new surfcasting reel. I have a Penn SS and Shimano Baitrunner, but am looking for something new. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? I was looking at the Fin-Nor's, and would even consider Penn and Shimano's...but looking for a reel that is better than i'm used to. thanks.

The very best spinner for the surf is the diawa emblem. The longer spool lets the line have less friction unraveling. put it on a 10-11 foot tica, with 30 pound fireline,, and you'll launch a hopkins into the next time zone.

The best conventionals are a toss up between Penn 525 mag , diawa slosh30's , and possibly abu-garcia rockets (6500-7000: im not sure they even make anymore in the required spool size for surf)

Conventional or Spinning? If you want better distance go with a Conventional. I use a Ambassadeur 7000 non level line for slinging bait.

i've been fishing spin my entire life, except for boat rods. in an attempt to broaden my knowledge, i'm making the effort to use the conventional from shore and inshore casting. thanks striper!

    MD Conventional Reels for surf

My convent rig for a long time was a Penn 140 squidder and it is still in service on a heavy 10'9" stick. I learned to cast from some old timers when that was the top of the line. I have tried a Shimmano TN 16 trinidad on that same stick and it is impressive! Many guys years ago got into the ambassadors and with excellent results as far as distance but I have never thrown one. The distance and the technique of casting convetional reels for the surf is one that developes with practice and use. My opinion is you can still get more distance with the convetional rig. Everyone breaks off rigs and everyone gets a backlash. If you are afraid off that don't set up a conventional surf stick! I don't use my conventional stick every time, it has it's time and place for use. Hope this helps, good luck.

I have the same set up with suffix braid on it Tica 10' the reel casts far with the extra line capacity..

Try an Avet SX or MXL for the casting set up..

if you want a good conventional reel, get an abu 6500 or 7000, or a 525 mag, 525mag is 150$ and by far one of the best if not THE best conventional for bait slinging there is. comes ready to fish out the box, for 150$..has an AWESOME super strong drag system, good bearings, and nice slidy mag, throw like rockets.

abu 6500's, while they need a few adjustments out of the box, are awesome reels, and something i prefer.

if u have a stock 6500, u can take the levelwind out, chop the top, put a spacer bar in,and that only costs 20$ for the spacer bar. im pretty good(not to pat myself on the back) but ive done like 10-11 abus so far, for myself and freinds and all come out fantastic.

if u have a 6500 you would like converted to a castin/fishin machine for the surf, let me know and ill do it for no charge. just pay ur shipping here and back :-) ill do the rest for free, only take me 30 min max.

Jesse are you magging you 6500's ? I have a freind who says the 6500 chrome rockets are the heat for surf casting. Ever see or use one. I think they are originally marketed in Europe but can be found on E-bay.
