    SuperBar Blues - 378lbs worth!

Good Karma Pays Off for Solo Angler!

I left the harbor at 6:00 am on a solo run, turned right to troll along the 50 up to Makua, then did a 180 back toward Maili. As I passed Black Rock, I noticed a bunch of guys waving me down from their stranded boat. Ended up towing them back to port -- just a short 2 1/2 mile run.

Back out at 8:00 am, motored to the 1000, then turned left. It was pretty dead out there, so I headed straight out to the 1500 hump outside Nanakuli where it was still dead. Turned right again and ran over the Maili pinnacle. Nada, but I did see two boats in the distance that appeared to be going in circles, so I headed over there. It was a nice pile of aku. The three of us stayed with it for a half hour or so, but they weren't interested in our lures.

So, I made my run through what I call "marlin alley", a straight bee line from the pinnacle to R-buoy. Once there, I got my first (and only) bite of the day. It hit the short corner running the Archer Ruckus Raiser and immediately peeled 300 yards.

A few more short runs and the battle was on. It was like a circus, heh, running from the rod to the helm and back to the rod at least fifty times near the end of the two hour fight. I finally got it to the side of the boat and made a tight left turn as I leadered it, then hit it in the head with a .44 Magnum bang stick. Finally, something big to gaff.......it's been a while.

Thanks to the guys at the dock for lending a helping hand. It took three people to huli the fish over the gunwale. Also thanks to William Aila for letting me crash today's tournament weigh in. The fish dialed in at 378 lbs.

Thanks Tom. You make some great chasebaits for the bars.

Yah, Pete. In the States we have an expression that might apply here..."You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink." You know how that goes, eh mate? Ah, well, we'll keep tryin' and some will keep doing great in tournaments and catching lots of fish on our very different lures, just as they have been for over two decades now. Thank you for the kind words.

Good to see P Pakula posting here. He has some lures I'm dying to try.

    Henrique,

Roger on Peter. He not only makes some hot lures, he's one heckuva big game fisherman and a good guy on top of that.

Tyson...our Chris Jones will be in touch with you.

I'm fishing tomorrow with SuperBars in my spread for sure.
Wish I had some Pakula Dojo lures to throw in there as well. Peter has some great videos. I'm tired of dragging meat at 5 knots. I need a tuna fix.

    Henrique,

Get 'em around the fish and you're gonna catch 'em up! Beware of the marlins, though. Funny you should mention the Pakula Dojo...it's one of my favorite SuperBar chasebaits.

    Good luck!
