Left OC at 6:00. Saw the entire fleet headed toward Balt. Started to second guess my game plan to head south, but stuck with it. The plan was weather driven as they called for some late wind out of the south. I think I finally made a good call. Slight chop and head sea on the run to Wash., but managed 32 knots all the way. Set up for the troll five miles North of the tip in 40 fathoms.
After two misses, we connect on the wwwwb, BW Islander. Toughest YFT I've ever seen. Gave a thirty minute battle on an 80 wide. Every time he saw the boat he would scream off fifty yards at 21lbs of drag. Then after 30 minutes he popped to the surface, rolled over and died! Re-set, circled back and the med/back GMbird goes down. Ten minutes later on a 50, second YFT in the box. Same size as the first one, but no comparison on fight?? One was 71lbs. the other 72.
No more bites so we looked for some dolphin on the balls, but nobody home. The current was ripping. Might be why they were empty? Wind started picking up, so we trolled North for a while. Had what I'm sure was a nice Wahoo on the planner rod. Screamed line, a few good head shakes and he pulled off. Had a wire cheater on the bait or he would have run off with my Islander. Bumpy, but soft ride home in the following sea. Talked to a number of boats from Balt. Good number of whites caught, wahoos and a few small YFTs and Longfins. Most had a wet ride home. What was strange and refreshing is we did not see another fishing boat all day, just wish we could have stayed on that tuna school a little longer. Hope the pics post.
