Cigar minnows saved the day!!!! Thank God for that box of frozen cigar minnows in the bait freezer!! Due to the early a.m. fog, it would’ve been a royal PITA bagging menhaden. As it was, we didn’t launch until 0730 and even then we pushed thru a few small pockets of fog on our way to the shoals. Once on the East side, it was crystal clear for a fast, smooth run to the tanker. Passed a handful of boats fishing the George Summerlin and the 1700 rock.
At the Tanker, there were a bunch of boats but not as many as I expected. The water was extremely clear and held steady at 71.5 degrees. It looked and felt like a dessert… no birds, no bait, no wind, no waves but the kings were there and almost always, someone was hooked up. Didn’t see any real big ones boated. Don’t think it’s happened yet because a friend fished Hatteras this weekend and slayed many 40+ lbers in the cooler water. We (3 of us) limited out by 1030 by slow trolling the cm’s. Largest was 31 and several in the high 20s. We also caught a 30” Spanish and 5 more but not quite that big. We were using my Penn 1/0’s that I’ve had since ’82 spooled w/12 lb Ande clear and your typical #5 wire live bait rigs. Damn, I love those reels. Keep each one in its own Crown Royal bag!!!!!
Heading home, we came across several schools of little tunny in and around the shoals so we broke out the fly rods. What a blast! 10wt rods with sinking line and Lefty Deceivers. Worked up a good sweat for about an hour. Caught and successfully released 7.
Great day, great catch, great dinner!
