    Sunday fishing @ the Cigar

We pulled into Owl Creek just before 4am and got the boat ready and launched @ 4:15. We started out to just bill fish but decided to run tuna rigs early and switch out if nothing materialized. We made good time running out in what seemed to be 4-6 not 2-4 foot waves. Gotta love those Glacier Bays. Started trolling and worked our way South East. Nothing except a suicidal chicken dolphin. Worked our way back up North and at 10:30 put out the White/Blue spread. Started trolling East, found grass in 300-330 fathoms, one more chicken. Trolled back out of the grass West back to the cigar(makes the pit a pain in the arse). Decided to pick up at 2:45 but we just change out baits so we said lets give it 15min. 5 Min later left, short outrigger starts to scream, no need to drop back so I pushed the lever drag forward out of free to about 3 out of 5 and started cranking. Bam, out of the water screamed a SAIL. I decided to pass the rod to My cousin since I wouldn't be there if it wasn't for him. Patience paid off for sure. One other thing, I bought a pink dredge from Jimmy K and as soon as we put that sucker down on the planner rod the bait behind it started screaming. Full drag on a 50VSW and after about 15 sec 150lb leader line broke @ the hook. If you haven't bought one....YOU SHOULD!! They look awesome in the water and no dout attract fish. Also, congrats to Matt L. for completing his Grand Slam. For those of you who think pulling a billfish out of the water is stupid....I agree....but this was our first Sail and we needed a picture. We caught 5 White marlin last year and the 1st came out of the water but that was it. We don't plan on another.

Congrats on your first Sailfish. IMO nothing at all wrong with snatching a small billfish out of the water for a couple quick photos, then carefull back in the drink.

    Glenn,
Thanks, he was fought for less than 10 min on a 50VSW and was out of water for a short period. He swam off very quickly. It's a shame the pict. are sooooo white but the sun was behind us.
