Crab mustard is good
Still Think'n Report 5/5/2007 Virginia Beach
Well...I came home from a retirement ceremony in DC late friday night and was flipping through my fishing links and look at the SST Shot. Showing a pretty good Eddy close to the 100Fathom line east of the Cigar, look at the weather...looked good for Saturday so I start calling some people to make a last minute run out of Rudee Inlet and see what's out there.
I manage my trusy first Mate/brother-in-law as the only taker on the trip...so we decide to sleep in (he was already out) and leave around 0800 and just mosey out there see what's happening.
End up dam near 100 miles Southeast of Rudee in past the 1000 Fathom curve before water heats up to 66 degrees. Put a spread out and start searching.....little bit of life, not much...some big-ass Ocean Sunfish mulling around doing what they do, one POD of Pilot whales.....Not much happening when finally the #12 Planer goes off and screams some drag for about 5 seconds before going limp.....crank it in and have empty hook staring at me ! What went wrong ??? OK. set spread out again and keep trolling. That was our only hit out in the deep, didn't mark any bait at all.
Pull lines and cruise into the Cigar to see what's happening, water around 60 degrees and there's some pretty good mark 100 or so feet down. put out a spread and planer immediately goes off....Otter gets on the rod and I start getting ready to do some clearing....POP, POP Right long, left long...POP, POP right short left short....POP Flatline zzzzzzzzzzz, ZZZZ left flat goes off, look up at my T-TOP and shotgun rod is bent and pulling drag.....
dam...no autopilot so I"m fighting a couple of fish from the gunnel while running back to the console to keep the boat straight...finally get one of the critters to the boat and it's nice blue fish...so of course the other 6 we get in are bluefish...nice ones though.....get the last fish to the boat and another blue smacks the leader and cuts off the last fish on the line....
OK, nothing major but it dam sure was fun....start to get another spread out..all naked hoo's now...first line out...BAM, fish on again...we played around for a little bit with them, kept a few for my Guamanian in-laws (they love anything out of the ocean) and called it a day....it was sunny and mid 70's 70 miles offshore...got back inshore and it was dreary and low 60's
....
Hopefully get into some Tuna this weekend out of OI, now that my boats back on the water it's party time !!!!!!!!!!....Bob
