    Stellwagon cod/haddock report

I am not sure if I am posting this in the right spot but here goes. I played hookie from work today with my girlfriend in hopes of making it out to Stellwagon in search of cod and haddock today. I was pleasantly surprised upon arrival to the SW corner to see that the bank looked the same as I left it last year (Full of life: humpbacks, minkies, finbacks, right whales, dolphins, gannets and bait everywhere . Just an awsome sight to take in so early in the year. I hope this is the prequal to a good bluefin year?
The fishing was moderate with fish hitting best between 90' and 120' deep. Jigs and pink squids were out fishing bait 10 to 1. Keepers were there but you had to weed through the shorts. NO DOGGIES .
ALL in all a great day with two nice keeper Haddock and about 20-30 throw back cod. I threw back the keeper cod in search of the tastier haddock. Sorry I had no cammera only one of those crummy throw aways so I will not be able to post pics. It would have been nice to get some whale pics as they were putting on one hell of an air show.

Way to contribute right off the back Dan! I'm so jealous that you were able to get out there. That's good news that the bait and whales were back already...hopefully with the herring trawling down things will stay nice and healthy this year. I look forward to fishing with you at the Cuttyhunk.

Thanks Shoefish. Poonman, Yeah I was suprised I gave my girlfriend the bait rod right off the bat and she fished it hard for an hour with 2 small cod and NO DOGFISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then she got pissed that I had caught about ten fish by then and she switched over to a jig too and she was nailing fish with me. Nothing to right home about but steady constant action. A lot of shorts.
The amount of life on the bank this early is incredible. I saw more whales out there today than I did last year tuna fishing. They were everywhere. I hope I can get out there one last time before the stripers show up. Sorry about the lack of pictures but there was so much going on out there today that I could not capture it all on film.

    awesome

nothing like stellwagen when it goes off like that...did you drop down off the edge into the 220-300' depths looking for the bigger brown bombers?
funny how some days the jigs kill them and others. FRESH shucked clams are the ticket...
thanks for report..great time of year to be out there...

Nice report Dan! Hard to beat fresh haddock. I've got to figure out how to avoid that thing called "work" too...
