Both great reels from what i have heard. I have the penn 50 vsw--- great reel, nice drag. I have heard that the avet clicker botton is weird... maybe check them out. The avet does put out so drag.

good luck with the new reels

Agree go with the lighter reel, but I am not a fan of penns. I like avets and have a 50W and the rest are shimanos. What size fish are you targetting?

I have heard from quite a few people that there have been balancing issues with the new VSX series on the 30 and 50. Don't quote me but do some research. I was into the same situation and I decided to go Shimano Tiagra, I have no affiliation with either product, and have over 16 Avets on the boat, just came down to making the right choice for me.

FWIW, I have both, and happily use both. I do agree that clicker mechniasm on the Avet can occasionally be a pain in the arse...

I went Graphite for standup to keep the weight down. I have Penn GLD 50 II's and Shimano TLD 25 & 50 II's. I've got 2 years on them with no complaints (yet).

I have a mix of Penn 30 TWs and 50s (TWs and STWs) for standup and have had no issue. I have not used the VSWs

But, if I were buying all new, I would probably go with Avet - I use them for my lighter fishing - Kings, etc and have been very pleased.
