    Squidnation Tuna Tournament Report- heartbreaker

Friday - Decided to go for the big eye bite on friday and headed to the Norfolk. Bites right off the bat. Lots of em. had one 30lber on the 7 inch rasta bar with a soft headed gm. got covered up with dinks on the 40 line so kept pushing offshore to the south wall. Kept getting bit and put a nice 55lber in the boat. got to the south wall and got a double of 57lber and dink. Almost all the bites came on the 7 inch rasta bar with the soft head gm. also got one on a b/w ilander. we were on our towards a decent stringer when for some stupid reason we decide to go into the crotch to find a bluefin. stupid decisio and we paid for with no bites in the crotch.

Saturday we were forced to go bluefin hunting since we did not have a big enough stringer to try and lb it out on the yellowfins. Fished the sausages and marked tons of bait an only 5 boats in the area. heard World War 111 going on at the hambone. Since we were not part of it, it was pretty funny and kept us entertained while the bite was slow. at 10:00 the wwb with b/w ilander starts screaming. get nicholas strapped in for what seems will be a short battle since the fish wasn't doing much. gets to the point where we can see the ilander in 10 minutes and the we realized what we had. dumped 3/4 of the 80 on the next run. it was back and fourth for two hours. had leader twice and saw the fish. Big fish yes, contender - who knows. I do know that the two other fish that were hooked next to us went 165 and 164. 165 turned out to be 3rd place. Nicholas did a fabulous job and I learned alot about his ability to keep on a big fish. At the 2:45 mark the fish seem dead and ready to give up. then he turned and dumped half the 80 and the line parted. We think it was either a shark or a the line went though a school of bait fish. Main line parted and was chafed 30 feet all the way up from the break.

Nicholas did manage 3rd place jr angler with a 57lb yellowfin and earned a nice trophy and $250.

It was very nice meeting all the people that came by the booth to say hi. great tournament. can't wait till next year.

He's the one who suggeted we go west. I almost fell overboard when I heard it. I should have stuck it out. Nicholas told me to stay put. Gunnar asked for another beer. So I made the decision to go west.

Yes- I heard yesterday. Apparently he was at the dock and stepping off the bridge to refuel. HE missed a step and got his leg caught in the latter. broke his leg in 8 places and will be out for about 6-8 months.
