Too tired to post up the pics but I will get them up tomorrow. Did an afternoon funfish trip to the jackspot on Friday with no bites.
Saturday first day of the Canyon Kick-off. Ran down the VB boys territory. First line in gets nailed with a small Tuna on the 7 inch Rasta bar with a prototype softhead Green Machine that Capt Arch on the Pelican asked me to build. Next comes a double header yft in a bigger class. first one hits the same bar with the same soft head GM and the second hits a little soft bird chain in Green and black. Probably to coolest tuna bite i have ever seen as we were trolling in slick calm water and I spot a small pod of things pushing water. I make a turn towards the pod and the pod spots me. All of sudden we see the pod speed up and the ripples are moving faster. not 5 seconds later their are explosions everywhere. The big rasta bar got hit but pulled off. The little rasta bar got hit and stuck with a 57lber and the green bird chain stuck and I blew the gaff and let him swim away. A little later in the day we get a 21lb dolphin. Cant remember the bait but i have pics. its was either a becko ilander or becko sea witch in blue and white. A hand full of hoisters and a long ride home back to the scales. ended the day in 3rd place tuna and first place dolphin.
day two - fog kept us from making it to the Norfolk so we defaulted to the washington. had plan to go to the 800/800 but spotted the two-tones on the 40 and just followed them for 15 minutes before we could put lines in. lines go in and within 5 minutes the 9 in rasta bar with the soft head gm starts screaming. Fish pulls a lot of line so I drop into neutral. as I am watch Nicholas work on the fish i glanced at the left flat that was slowly sinking. I big yellowfin slowly swims up to it and EATS IT. double on. NIcholas calmly cranks and gaffs his 55lber and I gaffed the 54lber. I start to walk back to the helm and I look up to see the right long is bent over. I guess we had a triple on all along. I look back to make sure we are no tangled and see a white jumping back half way to richmond. OOPS - My brother cranks it in. Fish ate a becky blue and white seawitch. Not a bad start. Triple header before 8:45 troll for another hour and the wayback starts screaming. scan the horizon to see another white airing out. get nicholas on the rod but the fish jumps off after a minute. that was our day.
Tournament results
1st place dolphin and $7800.00 for our tired but happy crew.
Congrats to Franky on the last call for a 1st place 70lb tuna and a cool $14,500 smackers
