    Spring HI/OI questions

If the work schedule permits this year, I'm going to head to NC for some spring YFT. I've searched and read a lot about where to stay, how to navigate the inlet the first time (wait for a boat bigger than you), etc....

I'm trying to figure a budget of what the trip will cost and I realized, I don't know how far we're running offshore to get to the spring fishing grounds! What is the average distance to get into decent tuna bites? I hope it's closer than the 50+ miles up here.

    Thanks

Its only 22 miles to the Rock Pile from Hatteras. The Rock Pile, or 280 rocks
are always a good bet for spring Tuna.

It depends on where you leave from. From Oregon Inlet you'll run roughly 42 miles to the Point and troll that area north or south most of the day. The use of the ramp is free. If you leave from Hatteras you will drive another hour south but the run to the fishing grounds will be anywhere from 15-30 miles offshore depending on the bite. You have to pay $10 for the ramp fee. It just depends whether you want to the extra ride in the truck or on the boat. Going to Hatteras is a boring ride to me once you go across Oregon Inlet.

    Not sure anymore

    Last year

you had to go to hatteras. Bite was WAY off out of OI. It didn't get consistent till June. Hatteras is a cool town and laid back, plus the inlet is easier to navigate. I have to agree though that the extra hour sucks. Especially if you leave VB at 1:30 in the morning. Don't get me wrong though, I would rather fish OI, I think its consistently more productive once the water gets their. I really hope April and May go off this year so I can marlin fish all summer long.
