NJ spreader bars and how to trool them

I have 2 preader bars in my tackle and i am not sure the proper way to run them. Is the bar suppose to be dragged through the water or is it suppose to be out of the water. What kind of placement out back is the best? I also want to get another , ant recomendations of brand and stlye. Thank you everyone.

well i made my own and it looks professional. i've only used it once but i just bought a straight bar and got help/tips from the all-tackle store in annapolis (thanks a lot keith and everyone there) but they told me just cut the 2 outside bars off so you only have 3 totaly rings to tie to. then i used 7 total spuid but when i used it i ran it about 30ft behind the boat and it hit the water and was bouncing in and out i think a bird in front of the whole thing would stablize it a lot and a high speed bar that i V shaped would help it steady out but i ran it right behind the boat and when i held it down to the water(the line) it ran steadier . I was told to run it right behind the boat, way back, in the middle(between short lines and the shotgun line). I think its just easier to keep it right behind the boat so if u need to get it out of the way its right there. I wouldnt really take my advice too too serisouly because im just a rookie at it but i hope it helped

    Archer Bars Super Bars!

Fred Archer makes outstanding spreader bars in various sizes and flavors and best of all .... NO METAL!
If you have not trolled a non metal bar yet you need to check them out, there is absolutely no comparison in function, ease of use, handling, troll speed options and fish cathcing capabilities between the old fashioned metal bars and the new better designed NON METAL bars.

METAL BARS are an absolute pain in the ass to deal with; everything about them is a hassle from carrying them around (big/bulky), deploying them (everything has to be perfect for them to fall back into the spread and troll correctly), reeling them in when they ultimetly roll on you or pick up a weed ( fun reeling a metal bar in at 5-9 kts isn't it?) and when you do catch a fish, a 30 LB tuna feels like a 70 Lb fattie, not very sporting you must say, and it's almost impossible to run the larger ones on anything smaller than a 50.
Metal Bars do catch fish, I know, I have caught many on them, but after fishing the Archer Bars I cannot believe how much better they are over Metal Bars.
Note: There are a handfull of top boats/captains trolling them back there for years, they just keep their mouths shut to keep the secret to themselves

Do yourself a favor and troll non metal bars, you will be very happy not to get a arsenal of metal bars...

Spreader Bar placement is a matter of Choice. Sometimes we run them 2 or 3 waves back, sometimes 4. Here is one of the newest and hotest spreaders on the market. It also comes with a 5 foot leader hook bait (not shown) and in a spreader bar bag.

    the money spread....

i'll give you "the money spread"....
reel seat 6" squid bars or the canyon runner 6" spreader bars-on the short riggers-both sides the same color...here's where it gets a little tricky, the long riggers get ballys-usually on hatteras lures agitators or mini voodoos-a different color than the spreader bar squids-pull this rig as close to the spreader bar as you can without it getting wrapped...this REALLY works for me-when i get a chance to fish !!!!
treat those heavy bars like kryptonite-they'll make you crazy, too heavy....use the light style bars and they really work....

Terp - thanks for the great recommendation!!!!

Allicat - just give me a call at 732-272-4445 and I will be have to answer any of your questions.

The long and short of it is the bars should only touch the water 20-25% of the time trolled at most. You should match the exact same bar off each rigger (long or short rigger - either works fine) and then a slightly different bar down the middle. As for color - you absolutely have to have rainbow bars in your pattern. We have been using rainbow bars as our primary color for 16 Years and never leave the dock with out them!!!!!!
