SAL G AND THE REST OF THE HOOLIGAN CLAN!!!
Without... cheaper and seems to work as good.
Birds. Without outriggers it seems to keep the bar out of the water better. But that will soon not be an obstacle. Can't speak as to the difference in number of fish, though![]()
As an average fisherman, I tend to think that with birds using squid shells, keeps the bar up and level in most conditions.... definitely WITHOUT using Moldcraft type bodies...
Now that hurts
Don't make me break out the sniper rod/matanza special![]()

Mike is correct though. Shell squids tend to be dragged through the water and make very little commotion so a bird helps.
MAULERtype squids dance on the water and don't need alot of help but birds will cause more commotion. the whole idea of the bar is to create a rukus and raise the tuna from the home down deep.
I baught a Squidnation green machine spreader bar with three small rasta birds and we've caught fish everytime its in the water. All the splash makes its hard to ignore

I like my bars without birds......I like the trailing squids to track subsurface so ill use an egg sinker inside them to get them down a little...This is just a personal preference though .....I add mylar wings on a my jet heads on squid daisy chains too for that extra flash just below the surface. These track on flat lines just outside the prop wash and ive had some good success with this method on my boat.
Everyone of my bars have two birds, one on either side, except for the squidnation rasta bar. My feeling is that the bird bars out perform the bars without. They track better and make a heck of a commotion.
I just picked up one bar with a bird from Stew. I like the idea. It'll be put to the test soon, very soon.
Here is my bar I like birds on it.![]()
