    Holy hell....

Was that impact-related or did it simply happen? Would think it was impact that caused it, by the 8x8 inch hole the CG report mentioned

By the way, is it standard boat-building practice to mold/construct the hull strakes with closed cell foam??? (Note the pink foam in the strake )

Not throwing any stones, but, that doesn't seem like a good detail...what happened to them being part of the total hull lay-up like "the old days"? The way those are detailed, they aren't even "part" of the main hull....they are only held on by the thin gelcoat layup on the outside of them. Which is why the strakes peeled off with the delamination.

Thank God everyone was safe anyway! Thanks to the CG and Capt. John!

Hey guys. We were underway for about 6 miles returning from the wilmington, seas were flat. Heard something that sounded like a bang, but wasn't real loud. Boat immediatly started listing to the port side, and taking water. It was very strange, didn't see anything on the water, nothing in front, nothing out the back.
The CG stayed with sonny boys all the way to the bell, where seatow took over.
Everyone did one hell of a job, and I can't thank them enough.

I had a dusky split and delaminate along the top lifting strake one time without hitting anything. Left a six foot long split that went all the way through.
Looking at the pics I'm wondering if there wasn't just a tiny crack that grabbed water at high speed and peeled back a layer...

This is exactly what I'm thinking, after looking at the detailing in the construction....all it would take is a stress crack in the gelcoat, which we ALL get after a while.....to start the process.

I'll plainly come out and say "I don't like it at all". To me using foam in this manner is a pure-and-simple shortcut, and it seems like it could easily end up this way.

Again, thank God it didn't end up as a disaster.....I can only imagine the feeling, being 70 miles out and starting to go down..... Everyone did a great job in managing to stay afloat and get back safe! I hope to never have to be in that situation, but also hope if I WERE that it would go that smoothly

    Smile Thanks to sportfisherman.com

I was captain of the Sunny Boy. We have no idea what caused the accident. Seas were flat and visisbility excellent. Nothing was seen in the water either before or after the mishap or collision. The crew felt a mild bump (non metallic) amidship, and we began rapidly listing to port. Soon a 10-15 degree list developed, and moderate water flooded the aft bilge.

We decided that the pumps were unable to handle the leak and issued a Mayday call at approximately 1:45p.m. The Coast Guard station A.C. answered immediately and confirmed our situation and position. They dispatched a Falcon Jet, but before it arrived John on Sportfisherman. com was on his way to assist. John arrived with riggers and flags flying at 60 knots. It was great to have company alongside, and reassuring to know that professionals who still care about their fellow fishermen are willing to come to your aid.

The cause remains a mystery, and will be so until the survey is completed.
    I will post the result.

Again, thanks to John and the crew of sportsfisherman.com for staying with us until relieved by the Coast Guard, and congrats to Kenny for landing his first White Marlin before the crash!

    GSF, Captain SunnyBoys

It almost looks like it just delaminated, which would have probably caused that bump that the crew felt.

Glad to hear that you guys made it back to port safely. It's nice to know that John and others were able to help so quickly. I'm certainly not an expert on the water, but I do know that situations like that can go from bad to tragic in a hurry! Glad you guys are ok. Oh and by the way, Congrats on Mr. Whitey!
