Fishing with my boys on the IMPULSE, we decided to skip the chunk and the bad weather to take the late ride out for a quick morning troll. I guess you have to fish when you have the time.
We were on the grounds at around six am, with a ride that was better than expected. We had four on relatively early. They hit everything: ballyhoo, big spreaders and small spreaders. Of course, I managed to have a fish headed for the horizon on a 20. We lost the fish on the unmanned rod and fought the two on the 50's to the boat in turn. I worked the third for an hour fifteen and can't believe we got the fish in. We really turned the screws at the end (as much as you can on that line). So, we had three 50" fish in the box and were pretty happy to have survived the melee.
With more tuna than we needed, we decided to try for a white, but were unable to raise one by noon, when we headed in. After the blitz, we had one fish bend a hook straight on a bar and one short hit on a long ballyoo.
I hope continue to go as well as they have so far. It's been a great start for the season.
We started at the tip and trolled out, as I guess most folks do.
The whole area looked good and there was bait to be marked and fished.
Between losing the GPS and spending most of my time in the cockpit, I'm sorry but I'm afraid I can't be much more specific than that.
We marked some serious bait about 15 miles short, so keep your eyes open. The water was upper 70's and crystal. There is a large area of fishable water pushing through. Had we not done well (and didn't have electrical issues), we would have tried the inshore stuff on the way back.
I'm sure there were a lot of guys chunking Sunday night, so hopefully there will be more reports coming in.
I was on the "WEGETUM" in the spencer. We found the fish about 1 1/2 miles short of the tip. Had 3 90-100 lb. yellowfin and a 50lb. longfinn. Guys are running over the fish to the deep. water temp. was at 78.5. I hope these fish hang around., It's been several years since I have seen multiple 90-100 lb. tuna on the troll !!! Great job Tunacity!!!
good job in the spencer it seems the southern canyons are really heating up with some nice size fish i hope they stick around for the the chunk that is just about starting
Great job. I'm glad to hear you echo my thoughts on the fish weights! I didn't want to estimate for fear of disbelief, but we guesstimated the same. Most of our pics have the tails on the ground b/c they were too much to lift without heaving!!!
Nice catch!
Yes, there is a ton of warm water and I'm sure we could have stopped well short. We had great readings inshore. We pushed it to the warmest water b/c we were hoping to get into white territory. The guys next to us went 2/4 on the marlin. We read 79 degrees. Just gorgeous water.
Craig,
I hope you get a chance to get out. Great fishing. Great weather. I'm sure if we had you we would have gone 4/4. I was 3/4 spool down and Tim called down "Hey Rob, can you fight that other one in the holder as well..." HAHAHA.
I still can't believe we got the fish on the 20 in the boat. I'm still sore.
