    Small boat seen offshore question

What's the smallest boat you have ever seen offshore???

We took a 20 foot mako to the tip of the Poormans ONCE. I would never do that again - I was a lot younger and a lot dumber.

I did see a guy fishing the Jackspot once in a 16 foot jon boat. It was one of the smaller jon boats - short transom/shaft style with a tiller outboard.

I just heard the report of a 22 footer sinking 60 miles off Ocean City.

Saw a 17' aluminum bass tracker on the 21 mile hill one morning. Seas were 2 to 3 foot and close together, we were in a 20' Pro Line, I felt very safe but the fishing was a little bumpy. We only saw him once in 2 hrs and saw no other boats, we did catch 17 BF in those 2 hrs all on plugs. I guess he made it back.

I guess some people don't mind pushing the limits. The recents news of a 22 footer 60 miles from the beach is nuts. They must be carrying extra fuel tanks?

When chunking used to be crazy on the hot dog, we saw prob around an 18-20' inflatable out there. It looked like he had about 5 extra fuel cans on board, but that is def past what I would consider safe. Ill never forget a few years ago when we pulled a crew off their hull after their 22 or 23 Grady capsized in the poormans. That was a wild day and we certainly learned a few lessons (prob not as many as they did tho)

I fish a 23' World Cat offshore on a regular basis. I've made many canyon trips in it, & fished beyond the 500-fa. line more than a few times.
Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.

Last June there was a good YFT bite at the Poormans, I saw a 17' Bayliner TROPHY out there. He had red 5-gallon gas cans ratchet strapped to his bow rail. . .

I personally would be hesitant on heading offshore in anything with one engine. . .that's a long tow back.

I'd say small boats offshore are the wave of the future,

who can afford to keep running with big sportfishers. the middle to high income people are going to continue to downsize and run smaller and smaller craft offshore, just to save some money and do what they enjoy.

the age of burning 3-600 gallons on a trip, is a thing of the past, only doable by the very wealthy. now you have to burn less than 150 gallons to have the same expenses.

unfortunately those of us who used to be able to swing spending $600 in fuel for a trip now would not even be able to go once a season at $2400 a trip. just for the fuel
