We all know about length x girth squared divided by 800 to get a weight estimate on a marlin.
There is another quicker measurement you can use.
At the very base of the tail measure the circumference and multiply by a factor of 10 to get approximate weight in pounds.
In 1998 we weighed a 78-1/2# White at the Open that measured 7-1/2 inch's at the base of the tail. Using this formula approximate weight was 75 #'s. The actual weight was 78-1/2 #'s.
