    Shocking Striped Bass Bycatch Video

chumtini posted this video in the Northeast Forum, but figured maybe some people here ought to see it too...

Without the elimination of draggers which will probably never happen, how can this be prevented?

I do not think anyone really knew the answer divot.. i think that is was a toss up between by catch and maybe some sort of disease.. i would be a little confused myself and i would also have to catch one and check it all out and see what caused it..

i wonder if there has been any sort of investigation into this.

Of course there is no investagation it is far easier to point the blame on the draggers or gillnetters. Nobody wants to be responsible.

Here in NJ it would be very easy to fix. Give us back the fish that were more less stolen from us. If there are two user groups that eat pie , one gets half and the other eats the other half. Simple Right !!!! Wrong ....... My should I a gillnetter in NJ not be allowed X amount of fish ???? There is a Comm Quota here in NJ. But our half of the pie is used by the Rec fishermen !!!! If you want to point fingers make sure that there are none pointing back !!!!!

your points are well said and i totally understand what you mean picker..

i dont want you to think i was blaming you guys at all. i am pro commercial trust me..

what i meant and let me clarify was that if someone did not pick up these fish, test them out, and see what the hell happened we would never know.. maybe a strange bacteria just like when the big lines of bunkers show up off of barnegat light.. it isnt good and there is more to it..

people always say, oh man... some dragger, netter dumped a big load.. NOT TRUE.. it is all death and if you pick one up you will know.

with that bass swimming around still alive there is no way in hell that they were out of a dragger or gillnetter..and if they where they wouldnt really have a problem swimming as most of the fish in a gill net are pretty alive when they surface as far as i know but who knows since i dont do it and dont know much about it.

i firmly believe there was something else doing that bass slaughter and i dont think it was comm. guys.. it had to be something different.. never seen so many bass like that ever and like i said.. i dont think that a gill nette ror dragger would leave them in a big trail nor would they be floating and swimming upside down.. seems strange to me..

can you maybe elaborate marty on how fish would act when released from a gill net or maybe if they come up alive or dead!>!>

i would like to check it out and know more about it.

    thanks man

this has nothing to do with the situation in New Jersey. You can beat that drum but it has little to do with this.

If you want to say that there should be room built into the system to keep bass as bycatch then say that, don't try and turn this around into a different issue.

are you trying to say that this isn't discards from a commercial boat? I don't buy for a second that it's recreational or hook and line commercial. I've released a lot of bass and have yet to see one that ended up floating belly up and struggling like that. Own up to the fact, that's a bad set and nothing else.

Were you there did you see it with your own eyes ???

As you known I'm 100% against waste Fisherie Managment is basicly based on waste. Those fish one way or another were wasted, if in fact they came from a Comm Boat then the real crime is that they weren't sold. Crabs and birds had a great dinner instead of a human. Brillant !!!!

That is why I'm not only a member but the President of Stripers for dinner. Maybe before droones of anglers fish in the EEZ Targeting Striped bass they should be made to watch that video. Or maybe you should come down to Cape May around the end of Nov and take a video of all the hypocrites fishing five fathom bank.

Now I may be way off base here but I really don't think that those fish came from a dragger and with out more info, we will never know. I would have loved to have cut open a couple to see and sent off the otolith to see if there was damage to them as well as the brain. Odd that they are swimming upside down, almost like they have bloat from coming up from the deep or otolith damage from sonic shock. Sad sight but no matter, we will never know with out the fish being sent in for research to determine the cause...

This may be very false but its just an observation. But the two incidents maybe totally irrelevant. Last year my dad and I saw the cape may/ lewis ferry go through a school of bunker and I guess they might have been hit by the prop or something because they were behaving the same way that those stripers were acting. And they weren't swimming like that until the ferry went through the school. Again, they could be totally different cases but it was just an observation and I figured I would post this up.
