    Shimano Tiagra 50 Question

Building out a new Arsenal for the canyons and have the tough part done. Decided to go with the Tiagra over Avet and Penn.

I am looking for 8 50 class, I have gone with 2 50WLRSA for the ramped up drag settings, and heavier applications like Swords and Sharks, now for the other 6.

In this day of added capacity with spectra which is what I am using, should I go with the 50A and take the hit on 250yds cap to go more sporty?? I should I go traditional 50W in case as we all know, blue suit and mr. eyeball shows up?

Thanks for the input and advice in advance.

If all you're concerned with is line capacity, I would suggest going with the narrow 50s and put a few hundred yards of specta down close to the spool. A good 300-600 yards of 65# spectra topped off with 50# mono and you'll have plenty of yardage. Chances are you'll never see the spectra backing, but it's there in case the big mamma comes along and decides to head to Europe.

The narrow reels will aid in getting less of the 'wobble' you experience when reeling in a fish.

So you think 4 50WLRSA and 4 50 narrow would be good?? I am keeping my 4 Avet 30's that I have now.

I pack everything with Spectra, even inshore, so that is going to be the way I go. I am just making the decision too hard now. I feel that a 30 is too underpowered for what I am doing so I am going 50, but with the narrow you are only gaining 30-50 yds but adding over 20 oz of weight, and about 6lbs of drag. Decisions decisions

What kind of drag are you wanting to put on your narrow 50s? If you're fishing 50, I would expect about 17# of drag. The 30wlrsa will handle that for sure. I actually have one with 100# spectra on it. I'd say you could fish that 30 day in and day out up to 80# with no problem. I'd say that 60# line and 20# of drag are about ideal for the Ti30wlrsa...it can go heavier if you want. According to Basil it will hold 1,000 yards of 80# spectra. What more can you ask for?

    Just my opinion.

Johnny -- I use four 50 wides and the rest are Avet 4/0 narrows and wides. Those Avets are fine for 90% of what we get in the canyons. Basil sets em up with JB and 100yrd top shot - we always use wind-ons too. But the truth is, I'm always praying the 150-200 BFT or Eyeball hits the 50WLS rather than the Avets. So far I have been lucky. Only got beat up a few times in the past few years, but it was adventurous and challanging on lighter tackle. I think you are better of with wides -- why not. You will be happy when a blue hits I'm planning on adding 4 Avet 50's or T-RX's this year to keep the battle time to a minimum. I think I need more rod storage! Good luck bud.
