Capt-D,
From what I've heard they work great! Well at 20 to 30 dollars a pop they should!
OwnerŽ Dancing Stinger Hooks and Rings are sold separately and are not included with the Butterfly Jig.
Yeah these have just come on the market in Australia and I am sure, well this is for Australia I am speaking about, they will do well as Shimano certainly are one of two big dominators in Australia.
At the moment the rig we use in Australia is the knife rig made by River2Sea. (see pic attached). Working a treat on pelagics but I cant comfortably say a guy caught a marlin on one of these jigs about 2 months ago. He let the knife jig run to the bottom but before it got there, the line went slack mid water, so he locked up, struck, big head shake was sent through the rod, next minute it was coming to the surface and the rest is history. It is in the latest Fishing Monthly magazine here in Australia.
But back to Shimano, I am sure they will work once half of the population are using them.
Ya may get bonus letters cuz I'm posting from my cell phone

JIGS GOOD! DACRON BAD!
Aloha
I picked up a handfull of jigs in Carnes last year
The ones with the Shimano lable look the same but if you say 20 bucks a pop I say more like 8.50 au, the long one was 12,, last October. I threw in an A87 for scale
First let me say the jigs with paint seem to produce strikes even when the sun is behind a cloud. Most guys who jig allot know the silver jigs works best when the sun is out and strong. This statement is for vertical jigging with a drop less than 100 feet
I didn't try them horizontal style like for bluefish ,,because the hooks are not designed for that style of retrieve.
These jigs sink with a flutter and see saw on the drop, they are not the best for use while drifting over a rip for bass and blues because they have too much action
The best use would be for tuna in open water,,the problem is the dacron on the hooks
I used the jigs to catch some reef fish and the dacron on most of hooks busted,,,The dacron left on the jig was a different length for each and evey hook.
This tell inspector ahi that the dacron gave at the hinge of the jaw where it touched the fishes mouth...The fish we caught were 20#s and less. The mainline was 25# big game with a 100# 3 foot shock leader
Ask yourself a question.....Have you ever heard of dacron as a leader?
Answer, NO....Why??? Because dacron will fail if it has a slight abrassion
This is my conclussion after only a couple of uses. What do you guys think?
Do you guys agree with me on the dacron issue?
cheers
ahi
from what i have read, i thought those assist hooks were rigged with braid, not dacron. an article in sportfishing a while back described how to rig your own, using braid if im not mistaken.
shimano sure is proud of their jigs....as well as the rods and reels (torsa) designed for them.
I have seen these and see that Melton's is carrying them. I was wondering if Tracey Melton had tried them yet and was hoping to see what he said about them
I have been using the Surecatch jigs as they came out b/f shimano....they are excellent....when used w/65lb braid they get down to the depth level fast and the action is great.....just last weekend in the spencer the bite turned off although i could see the fish on the scope.....after 2 hours w/o a bite even after dropping down to 40-60lb leaders i tossed the jig in and hooked up about 10 minutes later.....the key is to use a high speed reel, preferably designed for braid, and i used a lighter rod
In the canyons off of Jersey some boats have said that they have worked pretty well. I saw back in the winter on The Spanish Fly, Jose testing them. I personally have bought sevral different kinds of jigs from plain to hammered, Braids new ones and this new Butterfly jig, given them equal oppertunities and still the hammered jig out fished them all. A friend and I dropped down at the same time on opposite sides of the boat and right away the hammered jig hooked up.
