Frank Mundus told me once that Blue sharks are good to eat also, they just require more prep. I know he said part of the prep is to cut into 1" cubes and freeze. To thaw them out put the cubes on a cookie or cake rack with paper towels under the rack to collect the water and I suppose the uric acid that will drip out as they thaw. Then marinate and BBQ. I have never tried it. I also agree that Thresher is even milder that Mako. Delicious blackened!

Years ago I used to fish with a guy who loved blue sharks. He would gut them while they were still alive and claimed that as long as he did that they were great.

Personally I don't eat fish, but every time we had a slow trip and we didn't have any keeper makos or threashers we would keep a blue dog for him to bring home.

Made me a bit concerned gutting a shark alonside the boat while he was still Kicking.

I'm not much on critters, but a Black Tip will go in the Box every time. Don't know all the scientific stuff but we always bled them as soon as caught and let them bleed out then guted as soon as we thought they were dead. Good tasting fish, and never tried the milk or lemon juice. Sand sharks are ok, but nothing to write home about.

Shortfin Mako, Thresher and Hammerhead in NE. These definitely don't pee through their skin.

Mako and thresher are great eats. Like some others here, I actually prefer the threshers (not knocking the makos, they too are great) and I would way rather eat thresher than swordfish - way.

A good thing about both sharks is how well they keep. We bleed any fish that we are going to eat and that probably helps. Meat department guys out here, where a lot of thresher is sold in the markets, will tell you that they hang them like a beef and they last a long, long time. I have no qualms whatsoever over eating steaks that have been in the frig for a week or even more.

If you like king crab and such, here's a trick that results in world-class eats.

Mako is a favorite....pick up sesame/ginger marinade made by Lowery's... Marinade for 30 minutes tops... Steak it or chunk it. Grill fast over hot fire. Also works with tuna chunks or sword fish chunks... The marinade is a lighter teriyaki flavor at best. This will impress the naysayers who disagree with fish....Ok in the 30 minutes marinade process the fry daddy should be hot... Dip your okra, pickles and sweet potato chips. Fry till golden brown........ Now that is the shizzles right there.........

Mako is one of my favorite fish to eat...

Your making me hungry flat!

As for the dogs, they must be bled immediately. If they are put in the cooler or the fishbox without being bled they will turn green quickly. When they were allowed to be targeted here in the Chesapeake, the boats that caught them always had a guy set up for cutting them immediately after they were pulled from the nets. I wish they were still allowed to kill the bastards.

I hope to get tp try the Thresher one of these days...Sounds like good eatin.
