    Shark-free marinas--good or bad?

By now many have heard about the Shark-Free Marina Initiative, and here's an L.A. Times take on the issue. What's your opinion?

its a good thought, but i do not think it is going to work. The commercial boats are still going to be accidentally hooking and netting sharks. they are responsible for most of the killing of sharks.

    Fisherman,
Sharks can be a real pain some days and cost you a heap of gear and money.

On the South African east coast there is no shortage off sharks. I which the tree huggers would allow some commercial shark fishing on them because there’s to many. On a bad day you could end up losing about $400 of gear and bait on sharks that are no less than 100kg each. During the winter when we fish for Cob we could loose a 100 hooks on 1 catch. That’s not sharks taking the bait but a fish of 6kg that you try to hoist that gets eaten.
Some time it gets so bad that you don’t get one fish in to the boat.
The passed 3 year we have gone out at night to catch them cob but the sharks are so many that it ends up as a fruitless night with no fish onboard. These fishes are only present for about 4 weeks every year.
We thought that the sharks follow the boat from spot to spot but we are adamant that this is not the case because we leave a shark invested spot and motor to a new area about 3 miles away at 25ktn before we start to sound for new shoals. Man we have sharks for the hole world enough to make a Chinaman very very happy. I have had several day’s with 10 sharks circling the boat. Just waiting for a fresh meal. We have tried waiting, feeding, catching and giving them a baited hook with a bottle. All these tricks does not slow them down or scare them.
The economic impact it is having on our fisheries is huge. Yea I know what the Tree Huggers say but these guy’s havened done a comprehensive study in our area for many years. In the passed 4 year the shark population in our area has exploded. Sharks are apex predators and I’m sure that the sharks are casing more damage to the fish population than a line fishermen.

So stuff that target the buggers.

Not good or bar but absolutly stupid. Even their website says that recreaction fisherman only acount for LESS THAN 1 Percent of kills per year... So if this is the case they are stupid for persuing it in the recreation arena....

Pete first off nice to see you around and thanks for publishing our photos last year from Catalina of the Bad Company

To comment on this Shark free Marina.

    WRONG APPROACH IN MY OPINION!

I do believe he said in his video I would not be allowed to bring a shark into a marina who is involved in this campaign?

    For real? Wow
How about spending time educating the public?
How about run a campaign to raise money to hang a public identification chart at all marina and fuel docks and boat ramps.
How about seminars, how about video campaigns on sites like sportfishermen.com and La times to educate the public about sharks.

I care! Maybe not as much as some as I love to kill a fish here and there, but sadly in todays world TELLING ME I CAN NOT BRING A FISH INTO A MARINA THAT I MAY HAVE BEEN PAYING THOUSANDS TO DOCK AT ?

    Come on wrong approach bullshit!

    Educate the public!
Freaking people who automatically go for taking away my right can kiss my ass.

    Making sharking sound like smoking!

Sorry can not stand here, Must stand 50 feet away.
Can not pull in here with a shark that by law you were allowed to kill.

Im sorry but seems this country is ultimately out to just destroy the recreation fishery.

In the mean time you can not avoid the fact of thousands upon thousands of sharks killed in nets and long lines.

But hey lets take away our docking rights.

Sorry this pisses me off and I personally feel this is a complete ass back wards approach.

When these types of things come up

ALWAYS take a peak behind the curtains and see who is behind the movement.

Oft times there are agendas and ideologies deeper than stated intentions, and the fishing and hunting industries have formidable enimies with deep pockets and political allies that are currently in power.

The number of Pup Makos killed at these so called "Monster Shark Tournies" and the number of sharks killed and wasted is ridiculous as well. I am not for Shark free Marinas but, Thinmk that is absurd. I am for raising the length limit to 70" or better. How some are not embarassed is beyond me!

The Monster Shark Tournament has perhaps the strictest set of rules of any shark tournament, resulting in about 99% of all sharks that are caught being released. In addition, every boat is required to file a release report with marine biologists that participate in the tournament. The release report includes the species, estimated size, and sex of every shark released.

I agree with your point about the number of sharks and especially small makos that are killed, but your characterization of the Monster Shark Tournament is wrong.
