Alright guys another stupid question coming up. I've been told more than once on how to set the hook on the mysterious fish. I have seen that when you are dropping back the free line bait to mister bill that if he takes it you are not to set the hook right away, that you are supposed to wait till he turn his head so you have a better chance of sticking him in the mouth. This is also tue for dropping back a fly when you yank the teaser. I've watched my buddies tape in Cabo where many guys missed the stick because they set the hook too early. SO I'm guessing the same hold true to a bally of artificial? Whats your opinion here?
Trap a like a good 5 to 6 sec. count for me....Some guys longer some shorter....I dont think there IS a exact formula for this but there Is diffently an art to It ....
Trap thanks on the Ink Its all most done.....ON the white thing most will devlope a feel for It each sail or white Is different..Two years ago one day at the trip 000 we had more sails In the spread then we had anglers.3 times we gad 5 to 6 sails In the baits...It was flat out that day so you could see every thing It was unreal.... Especaily on a flat day you just dont see that with sails...Anyhow we came away with 5 sails & 4 white ones....& one slob tuna at 72 lbs that ate a dink bait on tld 25 lots of fun that one was...Now last year was awfull on the white & sails for us we just couldnt find them...We did manage to find the blue ones....Good luck bro.
TRAP ....HOOK COULD SUB AS THE FRONT MAN FOR ANY ROCK BAND......TRUST ME.........AND HE CAN ALSO GET IT DONE IN THE PIT............
EACH MAN HAS HIS OWN STYLE AND WAYS DOING THIS AND NO ONE IS RIGHT OR WRONG HERE, BUT MY METHOD IS ...................25 COUNT ON THE DROP BACK.........ONE SIP OF DIET DR PEPPER............EASE THE ROD TIP HIGH...........ENGAGE THE DRAG TO ABOUT 3 POUNDS AND CRANK....SMOOTHLY......IF ROD TIP REFLECTS THE SAILDOG IS THERE ...I ADD 1-2 MORE POUNDS OF DRAG ...ROD TIP STILL HIGH...AND CRANK WITH MUCHO RHYTHUM.........BUT I NEVER.......I SAY AGAIN........I NEVER "SET A HOOK"....................THAT IS A NO-NO............HE WILL LET GO IF YOU "SET" THE HOOK....AND SWIM AWAY LAUGHING
WHILE "HOOK" FOUGHT OFF THE BLUES LAST YEAR TO THE NORTH OF ME, WE CRUSHED THE SAILS IN CAROLINA ON THE RUN-OFF NTO THE SOUTHERN.............5 RELEASES BEING OUR BEST DAY..........AND 3 SEVERAL TIMES INCLUDING THE TRED BARTA BILLFISH TOURNY
OKAY...I ADMIT I SPOON FEED MINE AND DO GUT HOOK A COUPLE HERE AND THERE....AND I AM MOVING OVER TO THE CIRCLES........BUT I TAKE CARE OF THE SAILS, AND TRY NOT TO HURT THEM WITH MY STYLE
Well thats how we fly rodded them. When the teaser is coming in the fly is going out with the reel is next to free spool. When he decides to eat it and turns his head, we lock up the reel. Then gently add more drag if needed. Now the fly reels aren't button controled to lock up the reel. There is a knob that you turn to compress the spool to the drag surface. SO it works as a slow, smooth transmission applying pressure. It took a awhile to learn this. Marty I'm gonna give your method a try this year. It seems like practice and patience is key. The only difference that we do with the fly is that we actually pointed the rod to the fish from the side. Not up in the air. Have you had bad experiences with this?
This is great stuff guys.untill the red white and blue last year I have never targeted sails or whites. After having 4 in our spred I'm hooked.Unfortunatly I'm always upstairs running the boat,so the chances of me getting one are slim.
