    sell my catch? yellowfin

I am thinking about going out on a tuna trip in a couple weeks, I just wanted to know if I'd be able to sell the tuna we catch? A friend of mine is a chef, told me they pay 5lb is this normal?

I just don't want to waste all of that fish, we will keep one but if possible would like to make some money back for the cost of the trip.

Also, may catch some mahi mahi. sell them?

I'm in NJ by the way and this would be on a 30hr party boat not charter...

you need a permit to sell any kind of fish commercially... although there are a lot of restaurants and even some fish houses that will buy good grade fish from private guys it is not legal and i am sure the fda would not really approve of it along with a lot of others in specific governing bodies... the boat you are fishing on might have a liscence and you can speak with your captain/owner of the boat and discuss it with them.. sometime they will keep some fish they catch themselves and sell it when they get back.. see if maybe they can add yours into the til when they do that...

if your friend buys it i would make sure it is kept properly and make sure it is cold and good grade.. i like to core them if i am going to sell them to anyone...

or beter yet.. bring it to your favorite sushi house an trade them a 100lber for 4 weeks of sushi 4 days a week!! lol

thats what i like to do..

also i will add in that with the regulation on the yft i wouldnt say your going to have that much fish..

if you catch your limit of 3 yft at 80lbs a piece that is 240 lbs of fish.. that is going to give you i am guessing 100lbs of meat maybe give or a take some weight..

send it my way man!! i will stop by the boat and take a fish from ya. lol

Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

As Vinny said you need a commercial licence to sell them and don't get caught doing it without one. $$$$$$$$$$.

It's great to be optimistic about catching a whole bunch of fish and selling them to pay for the trip, but up here in Jersey the fishing has been slow for the YFT at best.

    Good luck on your trip.

The next bite on a jig.
This just came up on another site. I will leave you with two words they use in fisheries management..."replacement cost"

You really don't want to ever hear them.

Has the fishing been good enough anywhere to consider having too much? All I have to say is good luck getting enough for your own use.

The law prohibits you to sell your catch without a permit - I think that point has been made.

I have to get in touch with the captain, hopefully he will buy back some of the fish.

How are tuna, I've never gone out for them before, usually just stripers fluke blackfish or blues. Do you usually catch a good amount of tuna on these trips like with blues? Or are they as finicky as stripers and sometimes get skunked?

    Where are you fishing?

Nothing like the inshore bunch. They fight like hell!!!!!!

It's still fishing, you can get skunked on any trip.

The fishing had been a bit slow up here before the blow.

I hope the storm changed things up a little and there is a mad dog bite going on right now.

lazyfatass? haha, yea i guess i could just throw back a tuna after it's been stabbed and hauled on board, he may survive haha

Between the 3 of us going together I'd hope we land atleast 1 fish each. I'd probably only take enough for for dinner, I just enjoy fishing. Usually just give my fish to friends.

Good point, I didn't even think about a license. We'll see what happens when I talk to the captain.
