If this similiar type of tournament already exists in OC, I have not heard of it and have been fishing out of Sunset for the past 5 years. Who runs it and does anyone know about it? I certainly don't. I would like to help get something like this started, somehow someway ...
Yes, we're the ones who have put this tournament on in the past. We had a decent turnout in 2005, but turnout since then was not so good. We use to advertise weekly in the Coastal Fisherman but after losing money year after year decided not to last year.
The webiste for the tournament is: www.occhallenge.com. There is also an inshore division.
I don't think we'll be doing it this year due to poor turnouts. Please get in touch with me if anyone is really interested in making it happen. I'd love to see the tournaments live on but don't have a lot of interest in administering them myself anymore.
The biggest obstacles I saw were: 1. Charter boats are hesitant to put up the money, with the price of diesel it's getting tougher to make a living at it. At the beginning of the season, when you'd expect someone to enter a season-long tournament, they've got a lot of other expenses to gear up for the season. They're used to getting paid to fish tournaments, not the other way around. 2. Private boats don't feel they can compete with the charter boats that fish many times a week. A fair point, but it really only takes one day of fishing to "Kill Something Big". 3. Boats/anglers want to see big payouts. You don't get big payouts without people entering. I often heard, "I might fish it but I want to see how many people enter first." Well, if everyone takes that mentality, no one enters.
There may be some changes to the set up that could make it more popular, so seriously get in touch if you might be interested in taking over. And by the way, this tournament was also open to Indian River, never had a boat out of there enter.
I thought it was a great idea, and probably still is.
Thanks,
Jake (director@occhallenge.com)
I love the idea of a tournament, but why would you specifically have one weigh in station that could cost people more money in fuel to get to all season than the tournament pays out?????? Add another weigh in station and i'm in.
Hey Jake, good to see you on board. I know you busted your ass to make that thing work.
How about the entire eastern sea board !!! Any where from $20 to $100 bucks a person. Weighed in at any officially state certified station. You may have a lot of takers if the fee is lower. Easy to throw away $20 bucks than a $100 as this sport/addiction is all ready expensive.

A tournament like this would be fun. Adding an in shore division might attract more boats.
How would a season long tourny be administered ?.
Seems like a lot of trouble to make sure everyone is honest in a 2-3 day tourny.
