Sea Cure 7/5-6/08 Toms Canyon 150# Big Eye and 7 Yellowfin

Sea Cure's 1st overnighter and offshore trip of the season!!! What a start! We ran with the Tom Norgard charter from south jersey and Ohio. Tom, son Brian, son-in-law Chris, and good friends Joe and Augie. We got to the tip of the Toms early afternoon on Saturday and heard good reports from a few friends of yellowfin and big eye. We trolled one yellowfin just inshore of the tip in about 450' of water just before we set up one the edge for the night.

Whithin one hour of setting up we caught 2 nice gaffer mahi. The night bite was slow. We boated 1 yellowfin from about 80' deep, and lost about a 150# mako on a mono rig. It was a short night, we trolled till dark and trolled pre first light, knowing the bite has been better on the troll.

The morning troll was the best bite. We boated 5 yellowfin and a 150# BigEye. One yellowfin hit the planner rod down about 120' deep. 2 others hit when we popped the planned to check and reset it. I think a few followed the rig all the way to the surface from 100'. As the planner came up to the surface 3 or more tuna jumped through 2 bars. We got 2 of them. We worked the area a little longer and it paid off. 4 Lines started screeming. The fight was on for two, a third was a 30tw almost getting spooled before it spit the hook, and the fourth was a 50 shimano with about 3/4 of the spool missing. We boated 2 yellowfin within 15 minutes and the fight was just beginning with a Big Eye. From the run off we knew this fish was bigger, especially when it took 3x's the line the others took. After about 1 hour and 10 minutes, angler Joe had the Big Eye to the boat. After a dozen death circles, mates Terry and Ray sunk the gaffs and drug a Big Eye through the door. Great job to all my anglers--ALL 1ST TIMERS!!!
Thank you Tom for putting the trip together, it was a pleasure getting your family and friends their 1st tuna fish. What a trip to remember!!!

    Nice work Ron,

I am looking to get out next week for our first canyon trip.

Jeff and I were playing with the planer rig that Marty showed us the other day. I don't have any 80"s yet but we are going to give it a shot with the smaller planer and one of my 50's. (I saw your other post that the eyeball came on the planer)

    Nice job bro,

Have you heard anything on the Hudson??

I know it's a long ride for you but I figured that I would check.

As it turns out, I am getting better range then I thought I would, we did a couple of shark trips and burned a lot less then expected so I think I could make it to the Wilmington if I had to. Not that I really want to, and if your nailing them in the Toms, no need.

Great post and I am looking foward to many more.

Where's the vid?????? You got the camera up and working?

    Good luck,

    Ted

    Ted,

Hudson has nice water. I believe canyon runner was hittin' em good there this past weekend. We run to the hudson out of LEI. I love this inlet because there are so many canyons within 100 miles. We fish from the Hudsom to the Norfolk. If I was going tomorrow it would have to be the Hudson. A clockwise eddy and current running north has got to be holding fish between the tip of the toms and the west wall of the hudson.

No video, working on a new DVR system and havn't had time to set it up. We had some really nice explosions behind the boat too. We had about 3 tuna jump half way out of the water up through a spreader bar in about 5 seconds. Would have loved to see that in slow motion.

Good luck with the boat this year!! Don't hesitate to email me when you are going. If I know anything, I'll tell you.(except tournament time ....... just kidding)

Sure sounds like a great start to the season.

Good luck with the vids. I can't get a good video on land, I'm sure it's much harder on a pitching boat.

I will let you know when we are heading offshore.

    Thanks for the info.
