I just caught up with this thread. Storm I'm sorry to hear of the hardships that you and your fellow lobster fisherman are facing- I heard last weekend that there were a couple of operations that just shut down around here too. I'm not sure which ones.

Striper 101- good on you for helping out a friend

Has anyone thought about the direct internet sale of the lobsters? I know there ae a few direct seafood distributers, I just don't know how feasible this is. Is there a lobstermen union to conduct a direct sale business? Hell even a direct sale line on SFC or one of the other sites. John do you hear this? Just my 2 cents.

The problem with this is that the Lobsters that come from Maine are shedders. Which means they are soft shells. And they are almost impossible to send thru the mail. Shedders aren't as hardy as the hard shell Lobster. And therefore they die much faster. I had 6 out of the 100 die on me on the ride back.

Farm raised fish is just pure crap!!! This is a problem across the board, I think all of us full time fisherman are on the verge of losing everything in these tough times. I can go on for ever... Ken
One of the most ignorant posts to date.

What about all of the farm raised seafood coming from the USA? 99% of the oysters you eat are farm-raised by local fisherman.

I suppose we should only buy GM and Ford cars too.

I think he is refering to farm raised shrimp and other seafood from other nations that have flooded the market and put alot of local fishermen out of business or at the very least made it very hard for them to make a living. The farm raised oysters and other shellfish are here in the U.S.A. and support the local fishermen. Shrimp from vietnam do not support the local fishermen.

I have been eating LOTS of lobster in order to help the market. Been buying them pretty cheap (cheaper than steak, in fact) at the local supermarket. Eat em up guys, they are delicious!!

I WAS UNAWARE OF THE PLIGHT.....

SAD.....NOTHING IS IMMUNE

WHEN THE AMERICAN MARINE INDUSTRY IS SHUT DOWN ACROSS THE BOARD....THE WAL MART SOMALIAN AND THAI TALAPIA MARKET WILL RULE THE ROOST

Striper, Just as a point of interest Maine lobsters or any other lobsters do not shed all the time. You just happened to come up when they were. most of the time they are "Hard shell'

I was just looking through my latest National Fishermen, and it talked about the hardships being faced by lobstermen. Staging protest up in Novia Scotia to help try to raise prices by blocking trucks sent out for shipments. I hope it helped, as I don't think lobster men can survive on $3.99 a pound.
