Mother Nature threw everyone a bone on Saturday allowing us to fish wherever their little hearts desired in search of fin quarry. We decided to try for a mako then run off to the deep in search of tilefish. Of course, ballyhoo was in the bait box since warmer water moved in near Washington Canyon over the past week. A beautiful dawn gave hope to a successful day offshore as we breached the inlet…
Mako fishing proved to be more difficult then the previous week when we quickly caught and killed a decent mako. One small mako found a bait appetizing after drifting for an hour southeast of the Marine Electric. However, it jumped the hook after the fight ensued. A few bluefish were harassing baits in the chum slick, so the crew decided to crank in the lines and head off to the deep in search of Golden Tilefish. A yellowfin tuna bite came on just north of us (my nephews caught five in the 35-40lb class all on meat). But, our crew decided they liked eating tilefish better, so the ballyhoo stayed on ice. Finally the dinner bell rang and everyone came to feast at the buffet; rods started bending over double. It was the girls day offshore, they hand cranked most of the fish out of 615-680’ of water…
Nephew Tommy cranked in the largest tile of the day, which tipped the scale a little over 50lbs…
As the sun made it’s way to the western part of the sky, the crew took time for one last photo before calling it a day and beginning our 70mile trek back to the inlet…
