We spent Saturday overnight into Sunday on the Oh Well at the bite of the Baltimore. We tried to get out early and do some trolling but the grass was everywhere. There was no trolling at all, it was impossible to get away from the weeds. We stopped over the big blankets which had all the 3-8 pound mahi you wanted and they were loaded with those banded rudderfish and small triggers. We loaded up on them for live bait. In the afternoon we watched a long liner fleet from NC pull their lines and watched them stick a big sword. It took three guys to get it in the boat. One guy held the bill and two stuck it with the gaff. It kind of stunk knowing that sword could have been the one that could have bit one of our hook baits but oh well. There were three of these LL boats within 500 yds, there was bait everywhere, the water was blue and clear and we hooked a few small 20-30 pound YFT on the troll that we released so with all those signs we dropped anchor early in 600' of water and started chunking. As soon as we set up the first line went off, live spot. 60# YFT in the box. Got a second line down, live bluefish. Fish two in the box a nice 80+ YFT. Looked like it was going to be a great night! Put the third line down that took off but we snapped the leader. Finally got all the lines set and the fish were only hitting real light leader (25&30#. The makeral were everywhere through the night, not much squid other then an occasional but there was life everywhere down there. We netted a bunch of stuff just to pass the time, we netted a 4 inch dolphin, puffer fish, some kind of yellowish and orange tropical fish swam right by us, no idea what it was. The fish hit all night but we lost a few to a toothy critter down deep and we snapped a few leaders. Live bait and being anchored up was the key. The few live squid we did get all got bit. All the bites were between 100'-120 feet. You needed to be anchored up. There were no hotels available and the man was right in the area all night so the fleet drifted all night. We had a few friends set up a drift to come right by us and they still weren't picking up many fish. We wound up the trip with 6 YFT, and 7 Mahi. We released a sunfish also LOL sort of, they are some ugly and strong SOB's. They do jump when hooked, well snagged and they don't like it one bit .
