On board were my Dad,my brother Harry and my 14 year old nephew Will who is visiting from California.
OK so the forcast was E NE 10 inshore and 10 to 15 offshore so we decided to head to the Baltimore and target whitey. By the time we got to 30 f they had the 15knts covered at 40f definate 18 plus and in the canyon it was not quite sporty but definately snotty for a 30 foot boat. But we slogged our way to the tip where the water was a pretty blue and a consitant 73.5 degrees, very few birds or other signs going on.
30 minutes in we had our 1st shot and yours truely managed to wiff 3 times on a long rigger bite only to be served up a fresh helping of sancocho. My 14 year old nephew who has never seen a marlin commented that "That was so cool, I was looking right at that fish's face" .I said, "That's what it's all about Will".
So now I'm a little perturbed but hopefull. 20 mins later back on the #s "there he is" right rigger again I'm waiting for the bite and his brother pops up behind him. I get my bite and feed him through the pin, meanwhile the right flat pops out of the pin pulls off a little, then the left flat pops as fish # 2 slashes unattedned baits and I come tight.
What can you do? Will doesn't know, Dad is 82 years old and can't get to the rod when it's that rough and Harry is running the boat from the tower.
"Get in the chair Will" 10 minutes later I had Will puull the circle out of the fish's jaw while I held him by the boat, it suprised the hell out of him when I turned him loose."Why didn't we keep him?"
"That's what it's all about Will"
1 for 3 on whites and a 15 pound bull for our 1st billfish target trip of the season
