we caught this 60lb sailfish in 40ft of water at night trolling a rapala, for king mackerel

luckily one of the guys was on the back deck drunk on bintang beer and diesel fumes and heard the reel go off, we almost got spooled before we could stop the 80ft cat.

the surf was amzing and scored that toooo!!

first indian ocean sailfish for me so thought i would share it with ya, and it did have a dot on its forehead, jk i hate muslim jokes.

back to costa rica in a couple weeks to start up the mralin season again

onboard the addiction in the picture, the capt. is amazing nows the winds and swell direction better than any.

we surfed all the main spots with vvery few people

caught lots of fish at night, we live baited goggle eyes and caught wierd toothy eelsnapper things with giant teeth up to 4ft long the whole fish was a tail

sometimes reelin those in something even bigger would bite them in half,

    Lovely job there Mike,

Can I ask, do they often troll at nightime for king mackerel in the Mentawis?

I'm fishing in the south China sea and often have sails in groups coming right up to the boat at night when buring the lights for squid. They will not take any baits. Even live sardine/squid fished on 12lb mono. Seems like they are just playing. Nobody here trolls at night.

Sounds like the weird toothy thing is a ribbonfish aka hairtail. Huge teeth, painful bites, very shiny silver color, and the best king makka bait you could hope to find. Usually rig it with 4 tiny hooks on a long, light metal leader. Hooks are spaced to cover the whole ribbonfish body. Works great especially for specimen size fish.

    ya ribbon fish sounds good

the only reason i was trollin at night was that we where traveling to another island looking for surf, drinkin beer and in no big hurry, and had no idea what we would catch, and didnt really care.

that boat is so fast even at idol that the rapala barrely stayed in the water

9knots, we had the rapala out 100yds on 50 braid

good jumps and we released it which made the indo crew a little upset the love to eat those things, but being a sprtfishin capt from costa rica i have to morally let them go.

good fun and thanks for givin me a heads up on the ID on that ribbon fish

    good eatin fried up

    big teeth
