Run them down vs. Back down

I have been fortunate enough to fish in a few good bites.

How do you run your boat upon hookup? Run them down side to, basically following the fish. Brian Peele knows how to get it done. Circled the fish and stayed side to. We fished the other 3 baits just like trolling. Dump it and see if the bite is there.

The other boat would circle for 1 min. reel them up and back down on them. In a bigger boat no less. Soaked over the back. It drained well, but still soaking wet.

30lb gear, 60lb fish. 3lb of drag at strike.

    How do you catch them?

Depends... I'll do some backing if the fish isn't too far. I may do some backing to stop line loss then switch em off the corner... If its going like a scalded dog I'll swing the chair and run him off the side til I get ahead then let it swim to me. I like to be ahead of big fish and keep em off the port corner. Slowly let em come to me. On big tuna when I used to play the game I loved foinding their circle get in it just a head of them and cork screw em to sleep.

The draw back to a straight side to chase is that belly in the line. How many times you see even the ones we are backing on have the line screaming out the back and the fish launching off the side. By running side to you will inevitably increase that bow. Thats why I run with a quarter of the lines breaking strength or even less . The amount of water pressure a fast moving fish can bring to a line is amazing... For grins sometime... Dump a big reel at twenty knots with nothing on it to straighten and repack and see just how much drag is on there...
Hig speeding for wahoo at a hundred yards with a couple pounds and 12-14 knots I gotta run the drags up on eighty class tackle.

With our boats in CR. Most of the time we run them down and leave the baits out and get more fish. If it is a marlin or other big fish we'll just pull the lines and run him down to the end fight then start to backdown. Work like a charm and is less stress on the boat and crew.

    Chase down

Chase down if blue marlin or sails at about 55-60 Degree angle... backoff @ around 75m at the end of the chase.

For tuna ususally circle around them

Not sure about the waggle but he sure as hell is a nice guy and good captain. I have been fishing with him down in morehead for a couple years now. Very knowledgable and a hell of a fisherman.

my little boat it is weather dependant. if burning the line off we'll flip on a dime while clearing the other lines and then back untill the end game but if calm and not a lot of worry we'll clear lines as we are coming back
