Thumbs up RUN-OFF...BFT #1 in the books

We fished yesterday afternoon until the evening. I think there was 1 fish caught and released recreationaly out of everyone. Possibly another fish...but that was not confirmed.

We left the dock this morning at 5:00. 10 knotted it out to the fishing grounds. Started fishing about 6:00. Trolled around and worked some small bait marks, birds ets.....w/ nothing.

Around 8:30 we decided to move in a little closer to the beach. Around 9:00 we got a nibble. Fought him for about 35 minutes before we leadered him and brought his butt rhough the door.

78" fish that dressed at 190 lbs. Good shape, good color to the meat.....but like most fish being caught here now....no fat content.

No record setter or anything....but its 190 lbs more then we had when we started the day. 1 bite.....1 fish.

Fished for a while after that, but no more nibbles.

We got lucky today...we were the only boat to catch one.

Unfortuanatly like a dork....i forgot to get a picture of the fish.......of all times to not take a picture.

I did however get a picture of what was in its stomach.

The needle fish look like they might be a day or 2 old. The shad and crabs seem a little fresher to me.

congrats on the 1st. it would be neat to see a big boy standing straight up on its head picking crabs off the bottom like that.

Way to go fellas, glad to see the ghetto draws first blood again. With a dozen boats fishing each day and only 1 or 2 hookups its still real slow out there. Congrats on your first of many I hope. See you at the dock bud.

Thanks for the post and information

Hopefully the first of many to come this year for you. Thank you for the pictures and was wondering why the fish was so thin. We have bluefins feeding up here everywhere from what I keep hearing as close as a mile or two from the beach but only a few have been caught all under 100 lbs. Our local waters are loaded with krill, sardines and bluefish and the bluefins are feeding on this bait. Guys reported to me last night they saw them everywhere busting on surface baits 10 miles off Cape May, NJ while bluefish jigging. Hopefully the big fat ones show up any day off MHC as the water up here cools down up and the bunker start their migration south. See you soon and good luck

Just about every year at the begining of our GBFT season our fish have little to no fat. Most of our fish come from across the Atlantic from Europe and that area. They burn up lots of fat and energy getting here. If there is no food for them to eat then it takes mush longer for them to replenish themselves.

These GBFT's are eating crabs and needle fish because there isnt much else around from what I am told. Makes sense to me too. Why would a GBFT be digging around in the dirt looking for crabs when all he has to do is pass through a school of shad and filler up? Mostly because the bait is not around right now.

Little to no bait is being found by everyone who is out there looking for the giants so far. Hopefully that will change soon.

These fish do nothing but swim and eat. If there is nothing to eat....they go looking somewhere else. IMO....thats why we are seeing them further down the coast each year.

    Thats my uneducated opinion anyways.

Great report John. I was near Cape Lookout jettie Saturday and thought I saw you guys heading out. It was about 12:30 or so. We managed 11 nice trout but they were along the beach. We gave up on the jettie because of those heavy winds that were supposed to die down and didn't. Hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving and look foward to some gret BFT reports next month. CK.
