Team HAPi DAZE fished the Long Island Sound this weekend with a goal to catch a 50 plus pound bass to weigh in for the “On the Water fishing tournament”. The trip included my dad, myself and our great friend Harvey. Our 2:00 am wake up put us on the water by 6:00am and headed out to a spot given to us by one of the local hot shots. It wasn’t until 8:30 when I knew we were in the right spot when I saw my idle RJ pull up. I turned to my dad and said we’re in the right place and if RJs here it is the right time.
On the next drift Harvey’s real starts to scream and the game was on. The fish was striping line so fast we would have been spooled if the captain hadn’t run down the fish. We got her to the boat in less than 5 minutes in the fast ripping current, at the Loose Cannon Reef. I was holding the net and yelling to Harvey, “Here’s your 50! Here’s your 50!”. What does Harvey yell Rick, Rick, Rickkkkk, (not quite sure what he meant by that). After she was in the net the feeling of excitement was the best I have ever experienced while fishing. She hit the deck and I looked at Harvey and he was shaking. (Have you ever seen a grown man shake over a fish?) I have! Immediately she was clipped on the boga grip and it was bouncing around 56 pounds. Harvey wasn’t registered for the tournament so we snapped a quick picture and put her back in the water. After 35 minutes of trying to revive the fish, she just wouldn’t swim away. Sadly, we had to keep her. This was Harvey’s first fish over 50 pounds and well deserved. The fish was weighed for the dream boat contest 8 hours later and came in at 55.45lbs. We caught over 30 fish this weekend chunking and drifting bait.
RJ this Camels for you. Bill thanks for all your help!
