Rodbuilder question - Standup rods for kids

I want to build a standup tuna chunking rod for my son. He's 8, about 60 lbs. Standard quarry would be 40-60 lb yellowfin

Want it to be light but strong. was thinking an e-glass blank, slick butt. Length? reel seat?

Also, what reel? weight and size are the determining factors. Was leaning away from braid due to the risk of cut fingers

    Any suggestions would be appreciated

as far as the reel, maybe a new tld, or that tyrnos, i don't think i spelled that right. as far as the rod, i would have to defer to paul, the ones im building are long for chair fishing.

Your definetly wanna go with a light weight two speed reel to help him out. Keep the weight down on him and give him some torque in low gear for when he needs it.

I'll defer to the rod magicians here but would think soft (shock absorbing) tip.

Your goals are to keep it fun and safe first then have him land one that weighs more than he does

    That's just cool

Whatever you end up with please keep us posted on how it fishes, how he likes it? We can all learn from this

Not sure about the rod but to get a better understanding of what your building, Stalker Outfitters and Crowder both make kids stand up rods.

But as for a reel I would go with the Avet Sx 2 speed only weighs 16 ounces but I dont think its really big enoug for tuna. But Melton claims thats what its for? Maybe the Avet Lx 28 ounces.

Paul - Don't hold out, share with the rest of the class

Seaker - I'll post some pics when its done, but the yellowbellies won't be ready for chunkin till august.

BF- Good suggestions. I have a couple LX that work well for tuna, but there's no lifting lugs. With those chicken wing arms he may need a harness

Here's the scoop on stalkers rods, but not much description of the components. Extra short butt is the key

    Childrens Stand-Up Rod
The childrens stand up rod is 4 feet 8 inches overall length and has an extra short butt, and Aftco heavy duty rollers. It is designed to be manageable for young children so they can fight the fish, not the tackle. 20-50 lbs. class. The TLD 30 two speed reel is a perfect match to the Kids Stand Up rod.

As the owner of a rod building company myself, I might recommend a graphite/e-glass composite. Definitely a slickbutt, somewhere in the 5' range (not knowing what feel he likes, of course), 20-50# class, roller tip, ceramic guides (lotta good choices there), probably stay away from the larger reel seats and go with graphite. That combination will keep the weight down to under 7 lbs. Put a TLD25 (or a 30 2spd if the cash is there, but that still might be too big for an 8y/o) and he'll have something that he can use for a long long time... super light weight too!

DD - Both Bitemysister and Paul make some serious rods and they do a hell of a job on the technical requirements of a custom rod. As far as the reel goes I would suggest a two speed as well. I do like the avet stuff but have heard of some handle and drag issues. WHitey is all over the tyranos. I may try that and shimano just came out with a new TLD 30 and 20 two speed models.

Their is a recall on the tyranos.

Replacement Program in Place for Tyrnos 2-Speed
In order to ensure excellent performance and durability that Tyrnos 2-Speed is capable of, Shimano is requesting the return any TYR20II or TYR30II reel within certain production codes. Is yours one of them?

HEre is the info on the new shimanos tld
