GET A SPONSER, very few do it alone and who even wants to.turn you will over to your higher power remember your mind right now is a dangerous place so find another alcoholic in the program to bounce your thoghts off of your life depends on it!

One day at a time buddy and 8 days is great stuff. I remember well thinking that 1 week was nigh on an impossibility, and hearing the old timers with years and years under their belts was not reality and surley their lives were over and how the hell could they possibly be having fun without some booze and nose candy in their lives.

How wrong I was, I am having more fun now than I ever did over the least 10 years. I have found a new group of friends that have come out of the fellowship ( In fact Im about to leave shortly to take a few of them out for a fish ! ) Those old friends than cannot deal with my new sober life are no longer friends and I have had to be very staunch in this.

My sponsor who has 37 years under his belt is a vital aspect of my ongoing recovery and this is for life. This is a disease and I can only work at keeping it at bay one day at a time.

There are a heap of game fishing folk in the programme and I have certainly had no problem seeking them out or them finding me.

I wish you a happy and inspirational new sober life buddy and If you are ever down in little old New Zealand wanting to chase some BIG stick face and do some meetings as well then give me a yell.

I am a little surprised to see all the support here. It's gratifying, actually.

And something the old timers in that program will tell you, it gets better and better, to a point where you will be pinching yourself in amazement. Get a sponsor, especially now early on. Use that program. Work the steps. Be patient, and good to yourself. It takes a while.

It didn't work for me, exactly, in that I only attended those meetings because a judge insisted....but I did learn enough to make me think I could tough it out on my own. Which I did. Which almost killed me. The setbacks are a bitch, and it's a genuine life threatening bitch. And I am here to tell you that it's not the way to do it. Use the tools available to you.
