Risky Business MORE BIG BFT REPORT 7/22
Today we had ken and his group out for BFT. The troll bite slowed down quite a bit with most boats from what I saw, not getting much bites. We trolled most of the early morning without a touch and not hearing much on the radio as far as people getting bites. When t he bite is on it sounds like WW III on the radio but that wasn't the case today. Anyway the troll bite was slow for sure and the chunk bite was good but when you have to go down to 40lb leader what's the point if your gonna break off fish left and right. Unless you have a jig on 80lb leader you need to be a very skilled angler to land a big fish over 150lbs on 40 lb leader. the way I see it there are very big fish swimming out there from 150 to 200 pounds easy and to be honest if you dont have the proper leader and gear you wont have a decent shot at getting these fish. This is one of the things I pride myself on as I have, and use all of the top of the line rods and reels for my customers along with fresh line and new flourocarbon leaders on every trip, expensive yes, a new pack of flouro is $100.00 and I only get four leaders out of a pack and I use two packs. This ensures the clients the best chance at landing a big slob Blefin on my boat.
Back to the report. The water was pretty so while trolling around for Bluefin we put a popper out there with a smaller Ballyhoo to get a Mahi Mahi bite and we got a little one around 12 pounds but hey were after Bluefin right? So time is starting to run out and I'm looking and all of a sudden I find some bait getting harassed on the bottom with some Tuna marks around it and once my down line goes over the bait the rod twitches and starts to bend a little bit, I goose the throttles and the rod bends over and line starts to peel at a good rate....fish on! we get ken set up in the belt and harness and he beats the hell out of this poor fish, they wanted to gaff their own fish so I said have at it its your deck, once the fish was boat side perfect head shot and a pretty 65 inch fish hits the deck. After that I get back on the troll looking for the bait again but the fleet moved in around me so I couldnt troll anymore and went of to the 30 line looking for yellowfin. Never got a yellowfin bite but we got another nicer Mahi Mahi in the 25-30 pound class that made it to the fish box as well. so that was that and came home. Once I get the pics from ken I will post some up, The "mayor" has a few good shots.....

Kobey, nice job! Definitely a top notch captain, putting in the extra effort to ensure your clients the best chances possible. Glad to see your bailing them in the boat and hitting them on the head, keep up the good work. Give me a call next time you go fishing.
