Thumbs up Risky business bluefin reports 25+bites w/pics

Thursday I had greg and his people out plus travis and adam to get in on the Bluefin bite but it wasnt to be that day. fishing was slow for most all of the boats with a few fish that popped up around 10 am for a quick second then went back down after a few were caught by mark and the A-SALT WEAPON, I was a few miles to the south when they went off. when I got there I didnt mark anything but had some nice slicks but no bites or marks. That day was uneventful for us and it sucked the weird thing was the day before it went off but I guess those fish moved north.

The second trip had andy and his friends out and I told them the fishing was slow but there have been a few Yellowfin caught so with that we were off in search of the yellowfin. After a late start we got to the 505's and a few boats were getting a few bites so we trolled around there for a bit and had a long rigger come down but didnt come tight. about a 1/2 hour later the inside rigger comes down and we boated a nice yellowfin at 55 pounds then Mark gave me a shout that he was hooked up to a double of bluefins 5 miles to the north but again it was a quick bite and they were gone before I could get there.
Had a pretty eventful inlet crossing on the way in and that was that.

Saturdays trip was the one. had Joe and his group come out with us and I told them the same thing, the bite is slow. well the fish moved back in and once we got into them it was non stop action for the next few hrs with doubles and triples being the norm. we had over 25 bites that day with Joes fish being the 69 incher that we landed and killed. The fishing is world class if your a jigger or troller it doesnt matter. When its on its on big time, even when its slow there are a few fish to be had if your in the right spot.
Here are some pics of Joes fish.

yeah I hear ya Trav, hey on a side note I was thinking about rods and the gram weights and all the new guys that really dont know what all that means as far as what would a 450 gram rod compare to in say "our world" would it be comparable to a 130 or an 80 would a 350 gram rod be comparable to a 50 -130? I know the gram thing is to be used with the jigs up to that gram but if I was gonna do battle with these fish what would I want and have a good shot and braking the spirit of the tuna and why.

Great question Capt. I tried to show that on my site but like all companies we rate stuff differently. Heres off my site.

    SJ450G PE8-PE10/80-100lb 380-480g/13-16oz

Basically for tuna especially down in NC where they have lots of room to swim down you really need the lifting power. Therefore I highly recommend nothing under 400g jigging rod. We rate the rods like you said for the size jig, and some people hold true to that. I do not. I range rods to species almost for my personal use. The higher the gram/oz rating the thicker the wall and sometimes more taper to the blank so it has the "power" or ability to swing 14oz up and down without breaking.
The same holds true to fighting big tuna. You need the power to get the lift on the fish. My rods are capable of lifting some crazy weights but it doesnt mean it is intended for tuna lifting. You dont want the blank to fold/bend away to nothing even though it is holding 30lbs of drag. You want the rod to bend close to body but not noodle like, otherwise you have no recoil left in the blank to help fight the fish. I hope this all makes sense but I could literally go on for paragraphs and pages. Theres alot to it.
    SO........
Tuna try to use 400g and up, even though you may be using 250g jigs. I never have less bites due to this rating scale. NC tuna next year I will not use anything but my 500g rod. You can use 130lb line on the thing if you want.
NJ tuna in 100ft of water is a different ball game. Where's the fish gonna go? So yes you can scale down the size rods and use a 350g, 25lbs of drag, 80lb line.
The great thing with the jigging gear is that you can use a 4-5oz blank, 12 oz rod, and 30oz reel and fight the fish not the gear with 25+lbs of drag!!! Its man vs fish, not man vs fish and gear. We dont use the gunnels.

Hope this helps bro, and see you soon. Thanks for asking a great question!!!!
