Thanks for the great "how to". A couple questions:

    - what is the slowest you recommend trolling for Wahoo, and which lures at the slower speeds vs this lure?

    - Is that your Callisto bullet head, and can you get them rigged up as shown here?

    Thx for the info!

    Slow Trolling for Wahoo

Kite- Wahoo are greedy opportunistic feeders that will eat pretty much anything that resembles food to them, the term 'wahoo lure' is a myth in my opinion! The reason that most 'wahoo lures' are bullet heads is simply because that's the right shape for trolling at higher speeds.

Wahoo will hit lures at 5 knots or less, I have caught one from a dead boat simply retrieving the lure to go on home, the lure could not have been moving at more than 3 knots! I have also caught them while drifting deep chunk baits for tunas at 400 ft down....

If you are looking for a lure that trolls well at slow bait trolling speeds try this one http://www.sportfishermen.com/shop/b...ure-venus.html it features a cupped face and reversed taper head (meaning the diameter of the face is greater than the diameter at the neck where the skirt joins) that is designed specifically to be trolled slowly. In fact the last wahoo I caught was on this exact lure in the photo at 5knots, it was the only lure in amongst a full dink bait spread and there was no question which bait this fish wanted!

The lure in the photos is a PROTEUS 15" http://www.sportfishermen.com/shop/b...e-proteus.html I do not yet have the lures in the SFC store listed with rigging options, but we would be happy to do so if the SFC members would like to see it there.

    BahamaLure,

Believe it or not I have made several high speed lure's that are made remarkably close to your's. The one thing I did different is to set the hook's 180 degree's from each other. I like the way you explained using a keel waited head that keeps both hook's up. To tell you the truth I didn't really think about the top jaw being the strongest hookset point. Thank's for the insite and info. Frank

Thanks for the feedback guys, the tape is just regulation 3M electrical tape. I like the 3M for it's stretch it seems to form a better watertight seal than the cheaper less malleable brands. Never the less I do not hesitate to rip it all off if it's damaged and start over. Some guys are using that silicone self adhesive tape but I have not tried it. By the way I don't care about what color it is either!

The hook set is personal preference I think, the 180 offset is maybe better if you are using an unkeeled lure as you would be increasing your chances of snagging at least something on the hit. But with the lure keeled why not take advantage of that and put your hooks where you want them? Hook 'em up!
