    Riggin Macks and Split tails

Does anyone out there by chance have any links or places I can find out how a few people rig their makerals or split tail mullets...looking to rig as single or for a dredge (w the mullets). Also looking to see the options of rigging an all natural bally dregde. Been all over the net searching with no luck on anything good or detailed as far as tackle used, tips, etc. I'm beginning to think I'm only gonna learn these at the dock from someone that knows.

If there was anything like the sportfishermen.com link that rigged up ballys on circle hooks that was perfect.

Just trying to pick up some things in the winter...

Thanks for any help or leads

There are some products I got in SO. Fl that are bad ass for rigging mullets for a dredge. Its so simple, a 2 yr old can do it. I will ask cappy where we got them. They also sell the pre rigged twisted wire at many of the places in OC. Get some zip ties, one ounce chin weights and your there.

Take your wire, inert it in the top of the head through the bottom of the gills, add your chin weight under the head up in the lower gills, bend the wire up to the front of the head leaving a little room for the head to move back and forth through the wire. Twist it up and your done. Take a zip tie and zip the head tight around the wire to keep your bait straight. Thats the old school way of doing it.

    Ill get back to you.

    Good Luck,

    Karl

    Mrs. Capt-D, Liam and Avery!
Ive done both a few times but neither with any regularity, since the owner I work for prefers tuna to bill fish.

As far as the Spanish goes I have prefer a single hook rig as opposed to a double hook rig. I slice as small as hole as necessary to insert the hook (usually a 10/0 or 11/0)from the belly so the eye of the hook ends up in the mouth. Then using a drill bit thingy I have (ice pic will also work) I create a hole centered on the snout of the mackerel through the hook's eye and out the lower jaw, then crimping a leader, closing the loop. I finish up by throwing two to three stitches in the jaw to keep it closed (very important) and cross stitches from the gill plates down past the hook while making sure the hook remains centered in the fish. Prior to dropping it in I loosen it up a little to get it limber.

when I run it , I place it behind the dredge. May not be the right way, but that's the way I have done it!

I will also add a 4-6 oz chin weight to it under the chin before closing the loop

I have some of last years spanish and some mullet in my freezer. Im not sure if you are ever down in the Cape May area but I would be happy to sit and show you how I was taught to do it. I was trained at the Bahama Bobs School of Bait Rigging under Professor Wahooinbox himself. Standing by with my rigging needle.

    Pitchbait,
If you have time shoot me an email when you get a chance. I can always be in cape may if you have time during one of these cold boring weekends of January or February. I'll do it around your schedule. Thanks for the offer. Beers and or lunch and dinner on me at the C-view after....I gotta get my Mandy fix to get me through to the summer. You by chance know Fighting Angel, Hucklebuck, or Digger ? I fish with those guys and just trying to step it up a little bit for next season

    my email:
    jlavelle@globalindustries.com

thanks sharkJP if you have any time or a lonely smelly Mack you want to get rid of.
