Ok, the report for sunday I would not normally post but I think that it was funny as hell so here goes. The report starts on sat night when my fam and some friends took me to seacrets for a belated b-day thing. Travis (Chilli) was there so he can testify that everyone got a little knocked up. He left early (12:30-1ish) cuz he had a charter the next day and we ended up closing down. Now, just a few mere hours later my alarm goes off and i get up. . . every other door in the house is closed and no one is getting up. So, instead of sharkin and tuna gear, i load bluefish and seabass gear. 7am, 8am, roll by and finally by about 9:15 people start crawling out of bed. I guess in my "younger condition" i dont notice the effects of a long night of drinkin, and NOTHING will stop me from fishing. Now, by 9:30 the smell of some STRONG coffee is filling the house and all my crew wants now is a "boat ride off the beach. I say fine.
Now, since I have not had a chance to get the legasea offshore tuna trolling yet, I want so see how the spread pulls, so bye bye to the bluefish and seabass gear and out comes the tuna gear. I was pulling a FULL TUNA spread about a 1/2 mile off assateaque. 9 offshore rods, spreader bars, daisy chains, ballyhoo, etc. Now, It started out as a half joke for me, but I really learned a lot about where the holes, and clear spots are, how the wake looks on turns, different speeds, etc. So it was a very educational experience for me. ohh yea, we didnt catch anything, but i did have the tail of a bally snipped off.
Yesterday went to the jackspot. The plan was to head to the jackspot, pick up some bluefish, then go to the fingers and troll the 20 line to the marine electric. As I am sure all of you know, plans rarely stay the same offshore. When we got the the jackspot, the temp was right around 65, sometimes .5 more or less. Trolled the jackspot and LOADED LOADED LOADED up with bluefish. It was insanity. There were 3 of us on board, so we eventually cut back to 3 rods, then 2 because however many lines you had in the water, thats how many rods were hooked up. The funny thing was that they were only 3-5lb class of bluefish. PERFECT BAIT!!!!!!!!! About an hour later, and our limit of bluefish and the about the same amount of releases, I decided to shark the jackspot. Had a perfect SE to NW drift right over the spot. Water temps were just topping 66 and it just felt right. About 20min into our drift we got a strong pull. My neighbors friend Hugh got to the rod first and instantly locked the drag. . . DOH!!!!!!! no hookup. Same goes for the next pull, Hugh locks up immediately despite our "kind words" of "asking nicely to let us get the next pull". Hehehehe, oh well.
WE drifted off the jackspot with no more action, pulled up and started the drift over. 30 min or so into the drift we get our 3rd pull and my neighbor, Kenny comes tight, only to have the hook pull 2 min. later.
Towards the end of the day we get our 4th pull, I finally got my chance and come tight. 5 min fight and we land a 4' Dusky, yes, you heard my right. A dusky in 65-66 deg water. . . hmmmm.
End the day with over 50 bluefish, only kept 30 (MAN THEY ARE GONNA BE PERFECT BAIT!!!!!!!!!!) and one dusky release.
Taking a Buffett break for the next few days as I am heading to see him at Nissan, then its back for the small boat tourney.
Hey Shark,
Thanks for the report Bro' Sounds like you're just a little more dedicated than your crew! Looks like you had a fun day of reeling in the bluefish. I'm heading down Sat.
I can sympathize with the bit about locking the drag......
Had someone do that last year while fighting a fish.......snapped rod.....I took what was left of the rig and still boated the 11' Blue and tagged it. Frayed the shit out of the line tho LOL.
