Had to post this video; 1. It was made by the boat owner's 11 year old son; 2. Some of the most epic early season trolling in The Dip of the NE Canyons.
We left the dock at 7am with the intention of doing an overnighter. Arrived on the grounds at 930am. The first line wasn't 15ft behind the boat and we were on. It continued with doubles, triples, quads, five and six on at a time until 300pm, when we ran out of room for fish on the boat. We went 17 for 18 on 75-100lb class yellowfin. We threw back 13 fish under 20lbs. and also boated 135lb Eyeball. Needless to say the overnighter never happened. In over 25 years of canyon fishing in the Northeast I have never seen a daytime bite like this, this early in the season.
If you can get out, go. Give it a shot before the fish spread out.
We worked the clean side of a tempature break that was about 5 miles south of the Dip. All of the fish were loaded with squid and I wish I could say they preferred one lure over another but they were eating everything, every color. The spreader bars took a beating. We stayed on a school of what looked to be 10-15lb fish but a large majority of the fish we hooked were over 70lbs. Goes to show that the big fish are under the small one's so don't hesitate working the smaller fish. In six hours we worked an expanding circle that was no bigger than a 3/4 mile radius.
Check out this video made by an 11 year old of the day last week. The link is below.
