A QUICK QUESTION FOR THE PROS

We run out usually in 3'-5' slop (wind, short period waves...nasty) and to keep a comfortable pace for all on board is 18knts' (+/-).

I have never pulled cedar plugs, but bought some thinking it might be a good idea to drag a couple on the 35-40 mile run we make to the grounds.

We have kings and wahoo & dolphin once the water cleans up...so, my question is: With the goal being to reach the fishing grounds, is pulling these at 15-18knts a waste of time, or worth the effort?

When it flattens out, we run... but during the snotty days where there is a few hours to get there, I was think these MIGHT produce something.

OR, is there something else we could drag besides a bucket?

you can pull stuff for wahoo at those speeds, I know of a few slow boats that do that and they catch a few on the way out. I would pull plugs that are built for high speed trolling...cedar plugs might not get the job done. but if you pull them let them soak in a bucket of water the night before so they get water logged. they will swim better. good luck............

Maybe use one of those high speed lead trolling weights and some very thin diameter line like spider wire. Im no expert and have never even gone high speed wahoo fishing but just off the top of my head this is what came to mind. Be very carefull cause if one of thise lures come out of the water going that fast it could be like a torpedo.

Yeah, its worth it, but you might want to add a torpedo weight to it (16-36oz) to keep it in the water. Off Bimini, we had wahoo and mahi crashing it all the time. Got a kick out of watching this one big mahi trying to catch up to it by leaping out of the water several times. I bumped the throttle down and WAM he was on. I usually pull a Wahoo King/Ace lures or a Wahoo Wacker though, they seem to stay in the water better. Just make sure the drag is enough that line will come off when struck or you may break something!

at the new york boat show this year we bought a couple of these really nice fast troll rigs, that the guy told us they are to be towed upwards of 20 knots. They weigh like 3 or 4 pounds, and he said he nails big wahoo and more often than not large makos fast trolling these rigs, i am not sure if they are custom to his company or not, but i'll try to dig one out and get a brand name.

I'm no pro but on a day that we are only making 15-16kts. on the way out or heading home because it's a little sporty, we will drag BB San Sal, or Crooked Island Candy lures and have caught plenty of wahoo this way. we drop them back there with no weights and they swim and lay out a smoke trail that's awesome, if the hoo's are around they will come find the "Candy"

Thanks guys... How far back? or is this something that the answer is "whatever it takes to keep them in the water".

    BB? Black Bart?

EDIT: Found Them (see below). Skirts? Easy to change went they get chomped? (at $50.00 a pop, I hope so).

What about like a green machine or is that to fast for that style lure. I know at 12 knots we use to troll them um here in the north and hook up.

Hydro dynamis on lures is weird. Though the green machine looks like it would be streamlined enough, it gives up the ghost and starts tumbling at about 14. Our weighted mamba2 tracks to say sixteen or so. Funny enough though we used to amake a long pull design slant in two sizes that stayed stuck at 20+. Go figure. That bart bait is a great one. Wahooking makes some specifically for that exact purpose...
