Thumbs up Quick Matador Report 6/7 Sword, tuna, dolphin, wahoo and reef donkeys

I will get the pictures up tomorrow but thought I would post a quick report. Fished with my son Nicholas, Carson Mac and Steve on the matador with Capt Jake. Not sure of the line but I think we started around the 680 in 100 fathoms. Jake will correct me if I am wrong. Got to the spot at 3:30 am and dropped a squid bait down with the intention of soaking somewhere around the thermocline. Well it never made it their. After dropping it 3 armlengths a swordy ripped it from Jakes hands and before we even knew that we started we had a sword in the box. Had one more shark pull but it was about to get gray so we started getting ready to try and catch a Big Eye. First fish was a nice Bull for nicholas. Caught him on a Blue, Pink and white Matanza. No more bites until about 7:00am or so and then the yellowfins started crashing the 12 Inch Squidnation Checkerboard blue bars. The becko Blue and white pusher was also very hot today behind the bars. Ended up with 12 Yellowfins and a blackfin. We were gonna give it another 20 minutes and pick up at 10:00 am to hit the towers for some butterfly jigging. when the Blue, Pink and White Matanza started screaming. Nico rounded out his meat slam with a late morning wahoo. Hit the towers for some Reef Donkey action on the butter fly jigs. Ended up with a personal release citation on a donkey and everyone got to do battle with one or two fish before we headed back to Rudee. Thanks again Jake, once again you have outdone yourself. Get some Sleep. Pics in the morning.

    Full report with Pics

OK - Needed a little sleep. Left at 1:00am and headed towards the 650. ended up putting lines in around 3:30. We took our time getting out their.

Just as soon as we set down and get the first sword bait out Jake says I got this Joker on right now. I mean the bait was in the water 15 literally seconds. We obviously think its a shark and just keep rigging. I didn't even bother getting the camera out. We Jakes starts speaking in tongues something about a sword fish. Damned if it wasn't. A quick measurement and in the box it goes. My damn camera battery wasn't even charged yet. Oh well. Got another pull about 15 minutes later and then it was time to troll. Slow dawn as the Big Eyes were not around. caught one nice bull dolphin. A little later in the morning the tuna bite turned on. Not sure exactly where we were but I don't think we moved much. In fact I think we left for a while and came back. Fish were smaller. Had the big Blue and white 20inch super bar out again today but never got a sniff. Back to the drawing board with this one. It looks great but cannot get a bite on it. Switched it out with the 12 inch blue and white checkerboard bar and as Capt Jake said. It was going on like donkey kong. The bar got crushed for a solid hour and a half. Had a couple double and 2 out 3 on a triple but then it settled down to bigger fish singles on the Squidnation Blue and white checkerboard. By the way just to show I am not totally advertising - this is a discontinued color and other then a few that I have left for myself They are no longer available. But that might change for next year since it was on fire in NC this year.

They kept getting bigger as the morning grew older

We ran out of Butterfly jigs and had to improvise

Thanks Jake, Nico and I had a blast. Carson it was great to finally fish with you.

Outstanding fishing Bill! Captain Jake seems to know how to keep a charter interesting and productive. Versatility is a great asset.

Keep practicing on those reef donkeys. They will get you in great shape for the "go down" fish!
